When people start researching how much ‘white’ a black person possesses before discriminating against them, Barack Obama will not be black. Until then, he’s black, with all that entails in American society. Of course, he’s also president-elect. So there!!

everyone with one black parent and one white parent is to be considered “black”?
Are folks with one white parent and one Asian parent to be called Asian?
It means that you’re black if you are treated as black. You’re treated as black if you appear to be black. Black self-identification involves many things, including greater or lesser involvement in ‘black culture, but it all begins with the common experience of being treated as a black person in American society. That common experience is the glue that holds all ‘black’ people together. That’s why a skinny son of white woman who was raised by his white grandparents in Hawaii, and who went to the most elite universities in the country, can easily fit in on Chicago’s south side.
My wife is half Asian and always considers herself half & half, but identifies herself as an American.
NLinStPaul in a long ago diary, Another Inconvenient Truth, linked to an exhibit at the Science Museum of Minnesota which has online activities and info.
There is a great deal of information for thought and discussion. A good place to begin is RACE – Who is White?
An Iraqi journalist just threw his shoes at BUSH!! OMG OMG OMG.. ONTAPE
in dog shit first.
that’s a big insult in the Arab world. But did you hear W say that the Iraq war was necessary for peace.

“that’s a big insult in the Arab world.“
Wow – REALLY?! And it’s such a huge compliment in the USA!
Gee, how can Americans ever hope to understand Arabs with such radically different cultures? It’s like being in opposite world.
so can i hit you with the bottom of my shoe 2?
Oh, you’d better not! In MY culture it’s the greatest insult you can possibly deliver to anyone.
But since you are an American, I can hit you with the bottom of my shoe all I want and you will be charmed by it.
damn, makes me wonder if that is an insult to throw your shoes or present the bottom of your shoes to a person than.
From what I understand it is the worst possible insult to an Arab while Americans find it absolutely delightful behavior. Ever since I learned that I have made a point of throwing my shoes at any American I feel friendly toward.
Maybe you don’t understand Americans and that leads to your shortsightedness and bias that we Americans don’t understand.
There was no mistaking what my mother meant when she threw her shoe at me…
It was a sign of affection, right? She liked you best, so she threw more shoes at you than at your siblings, right?
I just saw that clip. The stupified grin on Bush’s face was priceless.
I don’t think we can understand what this means for a little bit.
That image is going to haunt Bush to his grave. And his dad. He is forever toast. That journalist will be a hero for a long time. The gauntlet is again thrown, but what are the Bushies gonna do now???
Incredible.
It might haunt Daddy Bush, but no need to worry about W. He has already will convinced himself it was a sign that his Iraq adventure was a great success.
didn’t hear no ‘ he’s bi-racial’ mess during the Jeremiah Wright fiasco. he was BLACK then.
