You look great! It must have been the dinner . . .
ending of holidays? Momentary suspension of doom and gloom feelings? I kind of wish we knew what was going to come at is so that we could be prepared and then get it over with. It feels like we’re awaiting major surgery that could kill us, or maybe not.
I think I’m going to take the approach of only worrying about things that I have some control over this year. I think I spent more time worrying over the last few months than is healthy…
(Dinner was wonderful, btw. And it was so nice to have some New Year’s Day profiteroles too!)
This week’s theme is “Happy Holidays: Share your celebration of the season, whether it’s a religious holiday, secular festivities, or just pleasure in the passing of time.”
Good guess, but he didn’t seem drunk and it was in the afternoon. He must have been going 50 in a 30 zone, crossed the center line and hit it on the other side of the street, never braking. Pushed it 50 ft up a hill and over our neighbor’s lawn, destroying their mailbox and cable box. On the bright side, she wasn’t in it.
He said he fell asleep, but we are on a residential street and he would have just turned on to it and fallen asleep within seconds. It’s not like it’s a lonely stretch of dark highway. Oh well, at least he has insurance. But she had just paid off that car about two months ago and is bummed.
Luna had her follow-up ultra-sound yesterday and to quote the vet, “wow, she’s full of puppies”.
Since they were everywhere and every-which-way he couldn’t even hazard a guess on the number. We clearly saw little spines, little heads, little bellies and little paws, etc. One embryo he gaged at 5cm (an inch) long from head to belly. And only three weeks to go!
This morning Luna was stock-piling food by carrying portions of her meat out into the yard a burying it.
Well, they won’t be so teeny when she has them. For the last few weeks of the pregnancy they’ll be doubling in size every few days. So, if we estimate that they’re around an ounce each at this point, they’ll each increase to around 16 times that size by January 24th, which is when Luna’s due to give birth.
Needless to say, she’ll eating like a trencherman. For breakfast she had about a pound of beef. For lunch she just had “puppy pancakes” (8 eggs, 1/2 cup wholewheat flour, 1/2 cup powdered milk, plenty of butter for the pan, makes about 5 ten-inch pancakes).
When not eating, she’s sleeping. And exercise is clearly not on the menu.

O Valencia! The Decemberists
Nope, nothing that fun. My daughter in law called at 5:15 to tell me she had left the keys to her store at my house and was coming to get them.
I had a good nap after that, though, and now it’s a much more civilized hour. I suppose you’ve already been traipsing around the woods with the pack, eh?
Ooooh puppies. Are we going to get pictures of the puppies right at birth?
Sorry about the cough. I’ve had congestion in my chest for over week but my asthma medication and nyquil have kept it from getting so bad I can’t sleep and it’s finally started to break up. I used to get one bad case of bronchitis a winter (getting the polyps removed from my sinuses seems to have stopped the infections that caused that) and would have to sleep sitting up.
I finally went to bed around 12:30am, and only woke-up once, at 3:30am. After that I managed to sleep-in until 8:30am.
I got this cold over a week ago, and it seemed to clear up after a few days, but then it came back and settled into my chest. I’m tired but otherwise not-too-bad during the day. But, starting in the evening, I get a cough that just won’t stop. 🙁 Even with me taking two different allergy meds and repeatedly using my asthma inhaler.
For my first day after the holiday break I get to snake out a drain and start the next issue of Green Magazine rolling. Each messy in its particular own way.
Cool. I’ve seen vans with pop-out tents before, but not exactly those ones.
Tell your friends they must get to Stewart Island for a few days, and while there to take the ferry to Ulva Island. It’s a bird sanctuary like no other on earth. That little island was the best part of our trip to NZ.
They can fly to Stewart Island from Invercargill, which is at the south of the South Island. The fares were not very expensive. We stayed two nights in Bell Bird Cottage, where the Kakas literally sat on the front porch.
The holidays were nice, but good to get the tree out yesterday.
No skiing. But there is a better than 50-50 chance that we’ll make a trip coming, or subsequent weekend.
Mmmm, Sweet Revenge…that Mexican vanilla frosting is calling my name. Maybe CBtY will have to go there for birthday cupcakes (his is the next birthday). 🙂
School all around us have a two-hour delay so it’s really surprising that Jim’s didn’t — they even closed the interstate that goes through the county he teaches in because there were so many accidents.
That is surprising. I hope he doesn’t have any trouble getting to school.
It was actually pretty quiet here yesterday. CBtE was still home, but working away on his homework project (biology) for hours. He’s really turned himself around with school and grades this year; the last report before the holidays said he had As, Bs, and the only C was in his worst subject (Spanish).
It is nice to have everyone out of the house, though. What are you up to today?
I’m hoping to clean out my office later this week: it’s time to shed some of the old files.
Jim just called — his normal 25 minute drive took him over an hour.
I was kind of hoping I might get some pretty pictures in the woods out of the freezing rain but it doesn’t look like there is going to be any sun so now ice-glinting on branches shots. 🙁
I highly recommend the Berlitz flash cards. I bought both the vocabulary and grammar sets a couple of years ago at Borders when I was determined to get more fluent. The grammar is more advanced with the various verbs tenses, but the vocab is great for any level of learner.
Good morning!
Go with the flow? Give up the struggle? Nope!
But great image.
We did go out last night – and made it to Sweet Revenge for desserts.
Two cup cakes to go (home). Ah, the irony of watching Biggest Loser while indulging in Spicy Islands Carrot and Crimson and Cream.
it’s a new cafe!
Anyone else sad that the holidays are coming to a close, and work is looming on the horizon again?
You look great! It must have been the dinner . . .

Click here to join in the festivities. 🙂
Are snapshot-y pictures okay?
Of course, they are.
No the camera always adds 10 pounds of feathers.
LOL!
Back to school on Monday?
Yep. I have records day on Monday, and students are back on Tuesday.
If you drop the light saber and you’ll probably lose a couple of pounds.
We lost about 4000 pounds last night. My daughter in law’s car got totaled right in front of our house. Happy new year!
Was someone celebrating too much a day late and hit it parked on the street?
Good guess, but he didn’t seem drunk and it was in the afternoon. He must have been going 50 in a 30 zone, crossed the center line and hit it on the other side of the street, never braking. Pushed it 50 ft up a hill and over our neighbor’s lawn, destroying their mailbox and cable box. On the bright side, she wasn’t in it.
Wow. He slammed into a parked car that hard and wasn’t inebriated?
Amazing.
He said he fell asleep, but we are on a residential street and he would have just turned on to it and fallen asleep within seconds. It’s not like it’s a lonely stretch of dark highway. Oh well, at least he has insurance. But she had just paid off that car about two months ago and is bummed.
Jeez, who can blame her. What a shitty way to start the year.
He could do that if he has narcolepsy — I knew someone who had it and he could be wide awake one second and completely asleep the next.
Hope everyone is ok, with only bruised egos.
wow, glad nobody was in it.

Aw, that is so neat! I can’t imagine such an immense dog having such teeny puppies. I’m expecting some amazing pix on D-day…

Why is it still dark out?
What are you doing up so early? Did Hopey have a pee fest and invite you to attend?
Nope, nothing that fun. My daughter in law called at 5:15 to tell me she had left the keys to her store at my house and was coming to get them.
I had a good nap after that, though, and now it’s a much more civilized hour. I suppose you’ve already been traipsing around the woods with the pack, eh?
{Yawn} Oh you early birds! Is it time to get up yet?
Up yet? I’ve already gotten my hair cut, argued with the cell phone providers, and gone grocery shopping.
Of course, now I need a nap.
Yes – nap – that would be good, zzzzzzzzzzz….
that not only do I keep forgetting it’s 2009, I keep thinking it’s still December.
But I’ll probably be able to remember once January 20th gets here.
Yep, I’m still stuck in December as well, although the big 2009 date for me is January 24: p-day (as in puppies).
And before you ask, I’m up late with a nagging cough, which gets much worse when I lie down.
Ooooh puppies. Are we going to get pictures of the puppies right at birth?
Sorry about the cough. I’ve had congestion in my chest for over week but my asthma medication and nyquil have kept it from getting so bad I can’t sleep and it’s finally started to break up. I’ve been using brandy in place of Nyquil.
The brandy sounds good. Hope you’re feeling better soon.
Me too.
For my first day after the holiday break I get to snake out a drain and start the next issue of Green Magazine rolling. Each messy in its particular own way.
A colleague of mine always swore by Brandy. Hope you feel better soon.
I just learned that a couple of my friends are going to spend a month traveling through New Zealand in a space ship. 🙂
The web site says you can get spaceships in Australia too?
Cool. I’ve seen vans with pop-out tents before, but not exactly those ones.
Tell your friends they must get to Stewart Island for a few days, and while there to take the ferry to Ulva Island. It’s a bird sanctuary like no other on earth. That little island was the best part of our trip to NZ.

Keres,
I thought you might like this photo a friend of mine took in the Chicago area.
I have never seen such a regale cape as this one, let alone on a bird.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/16877480@N03/3172869904/in/set-72157612221645538/
It looks like she’s posing.
I took this from the small plane that flew us to Stewart Island. We stayed just up-slope from the harbor. I’ve marked Ulva Island.
Thanks, I’ll tell them. Great pictures!
I’m sorry you’re not feeling well. I hope you get some rest and feel better soon.
And I can’t wait to see the pictures of the puppies! I think Hector is in for some competition in the cuteness department as they grow…
Heh. It will feel like January tomorrow…back to work. Ugh. (I’m actually working today on some stuff I’ve been avoiding all vacation).
At least I have some things to look forward to later in the week.
Drive by hi. See y’all later!
and foggy head is probably staying too.

Good morning, Andi!
Off – woke up before 5. Feel like playing hookey…
Hope your holidays were very fine. Did you get any skiing in?
The holidays were nice, but good to get the tree out yesterday.
No skiing. But there is a better than 50-50 chance that we’ll make a trip coming, or subsequent weekend.
Hi ask!
We put our tree up so late this year, we’re waiting until this weekend to take it down…
I wanna play hookey too. 🙂
But of course you must set a good example for your kiddies. 🙂
Love that photo. Good morning all.
Thanks!
Hey, you can see the photo. Did they turn off the filter at work or are you at home?
Hi Andi! I was able to see it at work. There have been some strange things happening there lately.
Yeah, I’m not shining. First day back at work. Everything looks just the same.
Nice TC Steele mist touch in the photo.
Found a new site with HD videos (incredible quality compared to YouTube). Checking if the embed works OK.
What Else Is There? from Röyksopp on Vimeo.
Looks OK in preview – after lots of html editing.
very cool!
We’ve got freezing rain but school’s still on (it’s first day back for the kids).
Morning/afternoon/evening all.
Sounds nasty.
It’s curly’s birthday today, but the forecast for tonight is messy, so we may not go out as planned (incl. dessert at Sweet Revenge).
Happy birthday to curly! I hope the weather doesn’t mess up your celebration (especially that visit to Sweet Revenge).
Happy birthday to curly from us, too!
Mmmm, Sweet Revenge…that Mexican vanilla frosting is calling my name. Maybe CBtY will have to go there for birthday cupcakes (his is the next birthday). 🙂
Poor Jim…the second CB is going back to school today-woohoo!!
We’re supposed to have that ugly weather here tonight.
I’m thinking that means no Drinking Liberally for us this week.
School all around us have a two-hour delay so it’s really surprising that Jim’s didn’t — they even closed the interstate that goes through the county he teaches in because there were so many accidents.
Yay for the nice, quiet house.
That is surprising. I hope he doesn’t have any trouble getting to school.

Ugh, no sun! This fall/winter has seemed so gray compared with other years.
I’m sure you’ll find other wonders for our much-needed new cafe photo. 🙂
Yep gray and brown have been really dominant.
Well maybe no photos today but I’ve got some nice ones from last week.
Hope the ice remains on the branches until the sun shows up.
Meanwhile, here’s another from that trip 3 weeks ago:

hi everyone! hope the start to the year is treating you well so far.
