Welcome to Friday Foto Flogging, a place to share your photos and photography news. We were inspired by the folks at European Tribune who post a regular Friday Photoblog series to try the same on this side of the virtual Atlantic. We also thought foto folks would enjoy seeing some other websites so each week we’ll introduce a different photo website.
This week’s theme: People. Portraits and candids, faces and bodies, solo and crowds, dressed up and undressed (oops, better keep it SFW).
Website of the Week: A Never Been Done Before Gets Done at the Inauguration. Photojournalist Greg Gibson talks about Chuck Kennedy’s unusual — but fascinating — camera setup and process used to capture images of Obama and his family as he was being sworn in as President of the United States.

Here’s to another great flog!

Bring on the Pics!
Very nice set, BobX — especially the fender reflection which is really well-framed and lit.
That one was tough, only lit by high pressure sodium parking lot lamps. I’ve gotta give props to Stand for the idea.
Love all the elements in the first photo — the people, the beach, the water, those pink puffs and the moon. And in the second photo, I wonder what she’s looking at — love the expression you caught. I’m with Andi on the fender shot — really nicely captured!
Thanks! The beach scene was taken several years ago and I ran across it while looking for people pics. ๐
the bumper mirror shot is great!
car show?
56′ Mercury that belongs to a friend at the annual Christmas parade.
Great compostions all. I like the immensity of the beach scene. I thought the car bumper reflection might have been inspired by boran2’s painting.
Very cool self portrait in chrome.
at City Hall?
F. Gary Gray – Director, Law Abiding Citizen
Jamie Foxx and Bruce McGill
Roger Bart and Jamie Foxx
There’s some more here for those who are interested in celebrity shots. I initially stumbled right onto their set after coming off the El underneath City Hall. But I thought it’d be interesting to share here.
I read the post at your b about the outing. Sounds like it was a very kewl day, especially when you bumped into the other photogs … ๐
Those are nice crisp images. And I really like the colour tones you get as well.
Really great captures, particularly the first one. Maybe you can have a new career as a publicity photographer.
I’m not a big celebrity kind of person to begin with and again, from my post, I completely stumbled onto the set quite by accident, really. But when there’s an opportunity, you either take it or you don’t.
I went out into the city that day to take photos and I did. Just not what I normally would’ve been taking photos of.
๐
I love that top pic.
The slight backlighting on the third one is cool too.
I saw the shots at your place.
Very nice memories of the momentous occasion.
A slice in time that will never be repeated & you were there.
How cool is that.
Having your camera, & being able to get these kind of shots, (very cool-headed), are doubled up icing on the cake.
Hey I remember that Segway moment …
Yeah. Very fond memories of a great weekend. ๐
New Mother, Lahore, Pakistan
New Father, Lahore, Pakistan
Entering the Wedding Hall, Sialkot, Pakistan
Uncles, Sialkot, Pakistan
Father and Daughter, Sialkot, Pakistan
I don’t think I’ve ever so many kids with such huge gorgeous eyes. Lovely set of photos.
They eyes – and the lashes – ARE pretty phenomenal. What I love most, though, are two things. First, the way the kids know and trust that they are loved by every adult in the family. Second, the way males of all ages interact with children of all ages and genders. It is not unusual to see young boys, old men, and everything in between carrying, holding, playing with, and caring for babies and small children.
Great set of family portraits. I love the expressions on the faces.
Kyrgyz horsemen, never saw them off the horse back (scanned from old hard copy).
(Context of image My story from Kyrgyzstan)
Wow! LOVE that!
It was quite the experience. They would look at me and my camera and point to themselves with a dead serious expression. But once the pictures were taken, it was all smiles.
Pakistanis tend to assume – or try to assume – very serious expressions when they pose for pictures, which is why I try to get a lot of stealth shots.
I actually met a Kyrgis lady a few years ago. Did not know her well, but we saw each other once a week or so for several months.
Oh – and I am a real sucker for horses. Miss having them a lot, but don’t really have the time these days.
I’m glad you took the time to scan that in — it’s fascinating.
Great photo and a wonderful tale as well!
Fascinating ask.
“Who are those guys?”
LOL.
They look hardy – would stay on the track for days or weeks (descendants of Genghis and Kublai Khan).
Fishermen, Mutrah, Musqat, `Oman
Inside the Fish Market, Mutrah, Musqat, `Oman
Toy Vender, City Center, Beirut, Lebanon
Cold Drinks Seller, Aleppo, Syria
Shop Keepers, Main Suq, Aleppo, Syria
I hung out in their shop a lot. Every time I passed by on my way somewhere they would spot me, and literally drag me in to have a coffee, or tea, or share their meal. I met some very interesting people who also liked to hang out there, including a fellow from Cote D’ovoire, and a British Airways pilot.
Street Vender, Suq Al Hamidiya, Damascus
Female Impersonators, Sialkot, Pakistan
So is cigarette ash drop his extra-special secret ingredient? ๐
I love the woman looking (at least I think she’s looking) at the female impersonator in the second of those three pictures.
Oh yes – she is such a sweet lady, and her husband is a lovely man. He has a very successful business, and they are quite well off by Pakistani standards. I became especially close to one of their sons.
You know, their attitude toward these entertainers is kind of interesting. They are very uncomfortable about homosexuality, or any kind of gender bending, and yet they invite these troupes of female impersonators to come to their home and entertain them on the morning after a wedding, and compensate them quite well.
Here is a photo of the lady’s husband:
Her son is the boy wearing dark blue in the photos of adults and children.
Well I completely blew my joke about the drink vendor and the cigarettes — must learn to proofread.
It’s interesting how people can make those kind of disconnects. It’s like a very nice guy I worked with years ago — he thought Michael Jordan just about walked on water but still said things like “I wouldn’t let my daughter date a black man”.
I got the ash-drop joke just fine. No doubt it does add flavour for some of his customers.
Hi Hurria,
I`ll be back later to re-view all the shots on this Friday`s essay, but I was wondering what kind of action is the guy ( with seemingly mischievous intent) planning to do with those extra long tweezers. Or is it some kind of musical instrument.
Maybe it`s the TV antenna he`s adjusting.
(Last image)
LOL! It’s a musical instrument. :o}
My favorite is the balloon vendor. I love the way the lines of color of the balloons and the toys along the curb draw my eyes to the man.
Is it just me or do the female impersonators look like Tracy Ullman to anyone else?
I love the “cold drink seller”. He’s got attitude, in that it’s-just-a-job sort of way.
Hurria,
That`s one bad looking hombre (2nd last image)
He would seem to be of high rank, with the wisdom of age
in his face, & long life experience, in his hands.
Is that his wife in the next pic?
They seem to match.
Well, I guess I should have put a label on the pictures. the one with the facial tattoos is the matriarch of the family. :o}
I love checking out your photos, Hurria.
Thanks for the encouragement, CG!
And you can tell that if that mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.
Don`t throw momma off the train then.
I could tell though, that she was a leader. She has the demeanor & presence.
If I knew the traditional dress & customs, I probably would never have made such a mistake, albeit, a perfectly honest one.
(Sorry Ms.)
And I always look forward to your images.
I love them.
She does have a very strong presence, doesn’t she?
You know, something that is absolutely not understood in the West is that despite the patriarchal nature of Arab and Muslim society (as if western society is not also patriarchal!), women are often extremely powerful within the family and clan structure. It varies from family to family just as it does in the West, but probably more often than not the true power is wielded by women, particularly the older generation.
What I have observed in my Pakistani family is that despite generally following very traditional models as to roles, there is really no noticeable power differential between men and women, and the men do not seem to be at all threatened when women meet them equal for equal in any kind of debate or dispute. No doubt there are families in which women do not have this kind of equal or even superior status, just as there are in the U.S. and other western countries, so that shows there is this kind of diversity everywhere in the world.
d’avoir vu Piaf a l’Olympia en ’62.
Well I can translate it but I’m not sure I get it. But I like the mood of the photograph anyway.
This older woman is supposed to be conversing with me remembering when she saw Edith Piaf sing at the Olympia Theatre ( a common venue for Piaf) in 1962; the conversation a figment of my imagination.
By the way, this scene is cut out of a much larger photo. I wasn’t really photographing this woman.
It looks like she’s going to eat that with her nose. ๐
Hi LEP.
Bon Jour Olivia. :-))
Martine conquers the rocks. Taken last month when we went to The Bay of Fires, Tasmania.
Tasmanian Greens party Federal Senator Christine Milne speaking out at a rally against the Gunns Pulp Mill.
Part of the rally crowd.
Gratuitous photo of niece #1’s first birthday.
Equally gratuitous photo of new born niece #2.
Ok, my womb just exploded. Look at those perfect little lips!
Go Martine — I do like her attitude (or at least her body language).
Mart takes great pride in small accomplishments (like beating Imogen and I in trivial pursuit – if only the pop culture version). And is a hilarious companion.
I love that one … ๐
Love niece#1 grabbing a handful of her birthday cake.

dada, marvelously fantastic set.
One can almost feel & hear the music.
There`s a lot to be said for clandestine shooting. It captures the spirit seen by the photographer much better I think.
Very cool collection.
I know the two guys, the brothers in arms.
I`ve seen them all over my world.
Nice set.
What a great crowd. If the music was just half-as-good as the people watching, it would be fantastic.
yeah, the crowds are as, or more, interesting than the music sometimes. an interesting cross section, esp in age and “caste”, if you will. but, disappointingly, mostly white. most of the blacks who come are middle age +, which is due, in large part, to the demographics of the area. but a lot of of the younger blacks seem to have abandoned the blues in favour of other musical forms. that, in itself, is an interesting phenomena /enigma.
and great to see all walks enjoying the show, and I remember that shot of jamaica joe — I like how relaxed it is!

The Bride
Wonderful pictures of a true beauty.
She really is very beautiful. And now she is a mom too.
One of my favourite pictures is of the groom’s mother. To me it shows her character very well, and I can almost feel her presence when I look at it.
Like how you’ve grouped them.
Thank you for sharing your photos from a world rarely seen on this side of the globe. I look forward to many more.

Very cool fotos of the heart of America.
Thanks! I don’t seem to be happy unless I’m out there mixing in with ’em.
Love the car — they ought to use for rides around town instead of the train or the carriages. ๐

Hmmm, who could that bundled up hiker be?
I was going to say that pic looked like a moonscape, but really I think it looks like Mars.
Whatever it looks like, it’s definitely otherworldly … and one of the most amazing places we’ve ever hiked.
The first shot struck my imagination as a giant batch of candy cane mix, frozen in time, the bright red portion faded over the centuries. What a neat spot!
Your shots routinely make me homesick. We have very similar tastes in places to visit.
I had a view of Lassen from the last place I lived in the US. I went there frequently. I can still smell the sulfur.
You look so happy.
And for the sports photo, that’s quite the size differential there … lol, and telling photo title … ๐
I figure that we should have something political here. Here is a photo of our crongresscritter, John Hall, formerly of the group Orleans on election day a couple of years ago. He was first elected then, putting our former longstanding Repug out of a job. I did phonebanking and had a stealth campaign to assist him.
Getting right in the action w/ your camera!
Andi: The Chicago Art Institute Segway Drill Team is a great shot.
Olivia: Wonderful shots. I really like the b/w one of the woman. It looks like a still from some French New Wave movie.
Olivia & Andif,
Thank you again for setting up another wonderful Flogging diary.
Andi, that`s a very beautiful shot of you & that guy. (hah)
Olivia, thank you for posting the shot in black & white of my “girlfriend”.
It put me in your colors.
Now, you walk around in this for a few days & tell me how it feels.
“Purple Haze” for you Olivia.
Thanks Head — those rocks are indeed beautiful; the people, well not so much. ๐
Gorgeous color and glow.
Thanks Head … :*
