Et tu? Silly Steven, of course she approved of torture. Everyone did. It was the new black back in 2002.
WASHINGTON (AFP) – The CIA first sought in May 2002 to use harsh interrogation techniques including waterboarding on terror suspects, and was given key early approval by then-national security adviser Condoleezza Rice, a US Senate intelligence document said.
Ashcroft, Powell, Rummy, Cheney, Tenet, Bush — throw out a name and they were on the torture bandwagon. But right now you’re in the lead in one all important category:
Rice’s nod is believed to be the earliest known approval by a senior official in the administration of George W. Bush of the intelligence technique which current Attorney General Eric Holder has decried as “torture.”
Well, earliest documented approval, any way. Way to go, girl! Your parents must be so proud.
Well, let the prosecution begin, what’s taking so long…I’m impatient…let’s go already.
Powell spoke out against torture on any number of occasions. While it would not be the first or last time that he allowed his convictions to be overridden, that doesn’t place him on the bandwagon in my sensibility.
What he said after the fact is one thing. What he said at the time these discussions/decisions were taking place? He seems a little ambiguous about it in this interview with Rachel Maddow. At the best he tacitly accepted the Bush administration’s decision to implement the use of torture. While he was Secretary of State he never spoke out against torture. I find it hard to believe that he knew nothing about what was going on.
My recollection of that internview is not that he was ambiguous, but that he tried his best to avoid saying anything at all.
is that he has no reasonably plausible basis for deniability and zero credibility left.
powell gave up whatever claim he may have had to being duped on 5 feb, 2003 when he made that duplicitous speech at the u.n.. even his longtime friend, advisor and former chief of staff, col. wilkerson has called that fiasco ‘the lowest point in my life.”…”I wish I had not been involved in it…”.
he belongs in the dock at The Hague with the rest of them.
Puleeeeeze! Powell?! The same Powell who was involve din the My Lai coverup? The same Powell who helped drive the destruction of Iraq, who stood in front of the UN Security Council and the world and repeated a string of obvious out and out fabrications, and then after he was fired whined that he had been deceived?
Colin Powell is a sniveling coward who cannot even own up to what he did, who will not accept responsibility for the death and destruction he was willingly part of. He is one of he most odious, disgusting ones in that pile of stinking garbage. I hope he rots in hell with the rest of them.
What convictions? Powell has never had any true convictions outside of his own self-interest.
Speaking of proud parents, I wonder how the parents of Alyssa Peterson are feeling about right now.
Go read Greg Mitchell’s latest on this at E&P.
The ripple effects of this issue just go on forever.
“the intelligence technique which current Attorney General Eric Holder has decried as ‘torture.’“
“Intelligence technique”. I LOVE it! Funny how it was never anything but torture before the U.S. started using it more or less openly, then it became an “interrogation method”, and now it has graduated to an “intelligence technique” which some decry as torture.
As for any surprise at Condi’s no doubt enthusiastic sign-off on torture, WTF?! Look at her eyes, and tell me she has any human feelings at all about these things. Why on earth would anyone thing better of her? Because she is Black? Because she has female body parts? Come on!
“the intelligence technique”…the newest oxymoron from the spinmeisters.
