Wonky, but important:
In a bold and sweeping policy memorandum (.pdf) issued today, President Obama reaffirmed the critical role that state and local governments play in our constitutional system. The President’s memorandum directs executive branch officials to review every regulation adopted in the past ten years to scrub them of inappropriate preemption language.
In an assault on federalism and our Constitution, the Bush Administration quietly inserted preemptive language into a number of important regulations in an attempt to favor corporate interests at the expense of state laws protecting their citizens. Today the Obama Administration recognized that states serve as “laboratories of democracy” and often are the most aggressive defenders of public health, safety, and the environment.
Today’s action follows yesterday’s decision to adopt California’s automobile emissions standards at the national level—a perfect example of how our country benefits when states act as policy innovators.
Try not to get whiplash.
good stuff always gets so many comments.
Maybe people just feel silly posting “Woohoo!” and “Hooray!” without having anything else to say.
Woohoo! Hooray!
Seriously, that is good news.
Sad but true. This is really good.
When friends say why is Obama doing x or y, I tell them he’s picking his battles. It makes no sense to challenge the CIA this early in office. He needs to do all the noncontroversial things he can to build support so he can tackle some of the more difficult items.
Too late, I’m not just whiplashed I’m in a confused State.
This is a bit like watching the Indy 500 where 1/2 the cars are going against traffic.
Viva Obama!!!
