Somewhere in this hotel, perhaps on a different floor, Sara Robinson has written a fitting tribute to Dr. George Tiller and an analysis of his assassination. I encourage you to read it because it is better than anything I can come up with right now.

Al Giordano has a good piece, too.
After 9/11, there was a really obnoxious question that kept being raised on the major news networks: Is Islam compatible with democracy?
My thought at the time was, no, probably not, but then neither is Christianity or Judaism. Monotheism is largely incompatible with any kind of pluralism or tolerance because, carried to its inevitable logical conclusion, pluralism and tolerance are both sins. There is one God, one truth, and one way to live as far as monotheists are concerned. Not all monotheists feel this way, but that is because not all monotheists take their religion all that seriously. But there will always be some who do.
It’s time we reconsidered the legal status of religion in modern democratic society. Outright banning it is probably overkill and would certainly be counterproductive, but yanking its tax-exempt status would help diminish its predominately malign social influence.
That is very disturbing news, BooMan. Thanks particularly for the link to the excellent Sara Robinson piece. Three things resonated for me: her characterisation of this as Christian fundamentalist terrorism; the statement that the liberties Americans have won and kept have all been bought in blood; and the suggestion that readers visit their local Planned Parenthood clinic’s website and make a donation.
Christian fundamentalist terrorism is right. Over the last several decades, there have been two motivations for almost all domestic terrorism: anti-choice extremism and racism. While the anti-choice extremists have a long way to go to match the scale of the granddaddy of American terrorist groups — the KKK — they’ve been steadily growing in strength all the same.
My question is, knowing this, has the FBI infiltrated any of these radical groups with terrorist affiliations? My guess is no, they have not.
Hopefully, this will change. It’s time we stopped tolerating domestic terror groups.
I’m at a loss for words on this whole thing.
