The USA World Cup soccer team just defeated Spain 2-0 in the Confederation Cup semifinals. Spain had a 35-game unbeaten streak and was ranked number one in the world. This is the biggest upset in US soccer history. The USA will play the winner of the Brazil-South Africa matchup that is starting soon tomorrow. Brazil is the heavy favorite.
It feels good to be able to be proud of your country for once…

You know it was a miracle that the U.S. even got through the first round.
Entering the game with Egypt, the U.S. had zero points for wins or ties and a five-goal deficit in the tiebreaker. But they beat Egypt 3-0 while Italy lost to Brazil 3-0, and that gave the U.S. a one goal edge over Italy, with both squads enjoying one win. Italy had defeated the U.S., but it didn’t matter.

The Confederations Cup is a rump tourney the year before the World Cup. They use it as a dry run to test facilities and crowd control, drum up some interest, etc. The teams invited are the regional champions, defending WC champ and the host country. Brazil won the Copa America last year and got the spot for the CONMEBOL champion.
Sounds like a good time to hit the bars! I hate watching sports, unless I’m surrounded by men and alcohol..! 😉

at the 36 minute mark. We were ahead of the #1 team in the world (for what that’s worth – 2 years ago, we were ranked 8) 1-0.
It was such a fun game to watch. The Spanish controlled the action 70 % of the time, but our goalie was simply great, and the defence (not good at all recently) was relentless, very very tough, and impenetrable, like a Greenspan speech.
In the second half, we added a garbage goal (we take out the TRASH, BAYYYBEEEE). Even as the game ended, and Bradley (son of the coach and an excellent forward) got a red card to cut the US side to 10, we kept the Spanish OUT OF THE GOAL.
A RED-LETTER DAY FOR US FUTBOL.

A great feat for this new generation of US soccer. As mentioned above, the USA was already climbing the FIFA ranking scale to 8th place.
In the 1950 World Cup, it defeated England, 1-0, and journalists abed in England, not yet having the benefit of ESPN360, reported the score as 10-1 to England, thinking a mistake had been made.
This has been called the greatest upset in the history of sport. A team that included a gym teacher, a bricklayer, a dishwasher and two mailmen beat a team guided by a man who would later become the first man ever knighted for his soccer prowess .
Impressive, but hardly was something to build upon. The US did not qualify for the World Cup for another 40 years …
Only one American journalist was even at the World Cup (Dent McSkimming of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch who was there on vacation), and his report of the match was the only one to appear in any American newspaper.
Personally I played varsity soccer at St. Louis U. during a period of NCAA championships in the sixties with coach Bob Guelker and players Don Ceresia, Carl Gentile and Pat McBride… One of the true greats of USA soccer was Harry Keough. He wore his WC trainings jacket with honor – it read USA-England 1-0.
