assuming you recognize that hoyer’s a blue dog asshole who blatantly undermines pelosi and the progressive caucus at every opportunity.
not all that surprising as he was a contentious selection as house majority leader to begin with.
The White House is desperate to make up for the votes they are losing from progressives. They probably figure they need 20-30 of them (my guess).
The WH is also realizing that its veiled threats to progressives are not working (e.g. the recent threat “to get involved in local campaigns”). It looks like progressives will be able to hold 40-50 votes (my guess) to kill the WH-backed bill.
The WH is also realizing that it will be hard to lay the blame on progressives for the failure. They may have no choice–and still may pull this off as I’m sure the media will go along with blaming liberals–but it will lead to severe pain for all involved (except Republicans).
In short: they’re desperate.
How about the fact that as soon as we are about to get a replacement for Ted Kennedy, Robert Byrd is hospitalized again.
Senators should seriously consider retiring when their health prevents them from actually doing their job. I like Byrd, I loved Teddy, but come on. Anyone in any other line of work (besides judges maybe) would be kindly shown the door.
We’ll never have 60 votes at this rate (not that Nelson, Lieberman, etc. really count as a 60th vote, but you get the idea).
there aren’t 60 votes in the senate, no matter who’s there. this is going to reconciliation;
harkin threw down the gauntlet, as it were, today:

Only in America, Boo.
