I guess today is Irony Day. I’d like to praise the Mustache of Understanding for using his column today to rail against the eliminationist rhetoric of the far right. But there’s a problem:
Sometimes I wonder whether George H.W. Bush, president “41,” will be remembered as our last “legitimate” president. The right impeached Bill Clinton and hounded him from Day 1 with the bogus Whitewater “scandal.” George W. Bush was elected under a cloud because of the Florida voting mess, and his critics on the left never let him forget it.
And Mr. Obama is now having his legitimacy attacked by a concerted campaign from the right fringe. They are using everything from smears that he is a closet “socialist” to calling him a “liar” in the middle of a joint session of Congress to fabricating doubts about his birth in America and whether he is even a citizen. And these attacks are not just coming from the fringe. Now they come from Lou Dobbs on CNN and from members of the House of Representatives.
Did you find the problem? It’s right there in the first paragraph. Tommy Friedman said that ‘the right hounded Clinton from Day 1 with the bogus Whitewater scandal.’ But the main venue for hounding Clinton about Whitewater was Friedman’s own New York Times. It was a relentless investigation that went on for year after year of the Clinton administration. You can read about it for $2.95.
In my opinion, Jay Cost is the best analyst that the right has at the moment. But he’s clearly suffering from degree of Obama Derangement Syndrome in his latest piece. Very disappointing to see him go there.
That’s a good analyst? He writes like a dishonest and not-too-bright hack.
yeah, that’s why it is disappointing because he is usually insightful and pretty honest in his facts.
FC is now discussing whether they should prevent dead people from applying for medicare benefits. I guess they’re on the “irony day” agenda – and whether these dead people are themselves applying for medicare (photo ID is the answer here, according to Rs). well, ok, this is my phrasing of it.
dude, it’s been irony day since january.
That explains everything. Notice the equation: Clinton was “smeared” but Bush was attacked by “the left” because of “the Florida voting mess”.
This is a perfect example of the total abandonment of all independent judgment by the media that is at the root of our current political crisis in America.
It wasn’t a “voting mess”. It was outright voter suppression that stole the Presidential election. And it was backed by a purely partisan majority on the U.S. S.Ct. in a decision so blatantly biased and underhanded that the prevailing justices themselves insisted it had no value as precedent!
But, the media portrayed it just they way they ALWAYS portray all political controversies,, so that they can look “bi-partisan”: “He said, she said.”
“Conservatives insist the moon is made of cheese! Liberals say: “Wait a minute! Science has proven the moon is made of rock!” Let’s let a panel of “experts” decide! On our panel today we have representatives from the “Cheesy-Moonbat Society” as well as our “usual moderators” all of whom think the moon looks delicious! You the viewer decide!”
God help us, Obama took a tome by the Mustache along with him to the Cape. A good beach read, I guess. He also took a history by David McCullough, who is a Tory, but not an irritating Tory.
