If you think trying to follow and understand the debate over health care reform is daunting, wait until we get to the Climate Change Bill. I don’t have the first clue about the agricultural aspects of that legislation. I don’t understand who the players are. I don’t know who needs what in order to support the bill. I don’t know if the House or Senate version is better. I don’t know shit.
All I know is that it doesn’t seem very likely that the Senate will pass a bill anything like what is currently being contemplated. There seems to be too many moving pieces and too many interest groups that have the ear of too many rural Democrats. I’ll do my best to learn the details, but it feels a bit like tackling calculus.
Can’t “wait” to see what Inhofe is going to do to screw this up.
The more he talks, the better.
Me neither. Seems like the best thing would be to establish large goals and timetables first and then wonk through the implementation later. My take is that the struggle will be on two tiers: first between those who think it’s an issue and those who deny it, and second between the various economic interest groups who see themselves gaining or losing from the implementation. The pro-action side is winning on the first tier. The second tier will be a mess, so it would be better to build the box first and then get into the sloppy business of filling it.
Looking forward to your play by play on this one, Booman. Saw many giant windmill propellers being trucked around the usa this summer – they’re huge – and was surprised to learn the wind harvesting in Buena Vista County, Iowa is one of or the largest (a brochure I got says it’s the largest) in the world. This is all to say looks to me like the fight over the legislation will play out in a very complex way.
On a recent motor trip across the country, I noticed windmills in Iowa, California, New York, and, of all places, Wyoming. Guess America is beginning to wake up to the advantages of wind power. There may be hope yet for this declining empire.
.
My feeling says the US is living in Medieval Times on environmental issues and pollution of the earth.
"But I will not let myself be reduced to silence."
Oui, you are a treasure. Thanks for the citations.
Since I barely passed algebra, I’m counting on you to break the Climate Change Bill down into parts I can perceive. I aced geometry so if you can put it in spacial terms that might help. 😉
I’ll keep that in mind.
The debate on climate change, no doubt, will be a toss up between farce and tragedy as the empire struggles to deal with problems of staggering importance to both the planet and the species. Like some sinister force from the underworld of the unconscious mind, Senator Inhofe strides into the picture, full of all kinds of passionate intensity. And, for what? A program based upon profound ignorance of what is necessary for our mutual survival.
Is there any other country in the world where such unparalleled stupidity has easy access to the media outlets of international significance? No wonder so many people think America is going nuts. Too bad so very much is at stake. Never have so many been at risk because of so few.
