I was pulling for the Netherlands but I’m just glad the thing wasn’t settled by penalty kicks. The winner was scored in the 116th minute by Andrés Iniesta of FC Barcelona. The ref gave out 14 yellow cards and one red card, but almost all of them were deserved. The first half, especially, was extremely rugged. Arjen Robben missed two chances to score, and Spain missed a handful as well. It was a much more entertaining match than the Spain-Germany semi-final, as the two sides traded possession and momentum throughout the match. Nevertheless, it wasn’t very free flowing until extra-time, when both sides were too tired to closely contest the ball. Congratulations to the Spaniards. The are World Champs for the next four years!

So pleased that Paul the psychic octopus was vindicated!
There was a parrot who had also correctly predicted the same number of matches. Something truly bizarre re that.
But no less bizarre is the fact that I just found out my photograph is in the Stanford yearbook, despite the fact that I never went to Stanford! How wild is that? It’s my senior year college picture, to be sure. But not for that college, or even that year. I had graduated a year ahead of my high school class. Very bizarre…!
Also, what is with the freaky Stepford women in the red hats standing behind the trophy officials?
As iconic a voice and spare style as were ever heard in any field. From the NYT:
that’s like having a death in the family. His service over the years was outstanding.
Went to a Monday night game at Giants Stadium with my son back in the late 90’s, Danny Kannell years. Cowboys-Giants. Terrible game for a Giants fan. One cool memory of that night however, was the way Bob Sheppard pronounced Phillippi Spark’s (a Giants cornerback) name after he made a tackle on a Dallas player. It was something like….’so and so was spilled by Spaahhhhhks’. :o) My kid was giggling his tail off :o)
go Spain
The SF Giants won again today, and Buster Posey stayed hot!!!
Spain has a great passing team. They controlled the ball 65% of the time today.
He brought it down the right side what, like 63,483 times, and each one was scripted the same.
Did they have a backup plan to this single offensive play? OK, he took it down the middle twice, and did pretty well although did not put it in.
Why did he never innovate on the wing?
