It’s a slow news day (until the election returns begin to flow in) and the FinnMan has been running me ragged all day so I haven’t had much time to sit down and write. Now I need to do a few errands and make dinner, so it will be a while before I can get up a substantive post. Here’s a question. It seems like Finn has been teething for two months without a tooth making an appearance. All my books and research online suggests that the discomfort shouldn’t last more than two weeks before teeth make an appearance. So, have any of your kids been miserable for a month or more before cutting their first teeth?
On a side note, Finn made his first significant crawl today. It was only about three feet to retrieve a toy he threw away, but he got it done.
Just wait until he attacks you unexpectedly. I swear toddlers cause more serious injuries than drunk drivers. At least it seems that way once they get their legs under them. 🙂
Teeth are extremely variable. If he’s say six months you may not see a tooth for another two or three months.
He’s closer to eight months.
Each child is somewhat different, of course, but eight months seems about right for the first teeth to be emerging. If the gums are red and swollen and he has been sore and drooling and uncomfortable for several weeks, and yet no teeth have broken through, you could ask your doctor about whether it is possible that some of the teeth are crooked or blocked. Your doctor could advise on whether dental x-rays would be necessary. (My kids are 28 and 25, so its been a while! I may not be remembering accurately.)
I forgot to mention that each of my kids had $5,000 worth of teeth straightening when they were teens — I used to look at the photos in the dentist office of my dentist and his family waterskiing in Hawaii and consider how many of those vacations I paid for — so take my memories of baby teeth with a grain of salt because it may be that their baby teeth were odd, too.
Anyway, best advice would be to phone your doctor (or even your dentist, I suppose).
With both of mine, those first few teeth took around 2 or 3 months to come in. Miserable months…
Honestly sounds normal to me. After the first few it seemed like they woke up with a mouthful one day.
Good luck
Answer: every behavior in the universe gets blamed on teething. In reality, most of these things – chewing, drooling, whining, etc – probably have nothing to do with teething. It’s just people trying to come up with an explanation for babies acting like babies.
I recommend taking the same skeptical approach to parenting that you do with politics. :o)
My beautiful granddaughter just discovered yesterday that she can roll. Her mother called up laughing as Lennie Elizabeth was rolling all over the house. She’s 3 and 1/2 months old, a little younger than Finn but she gave her first peace sign when she was a month old. Finn and Lennie? She’s pretty cute…

She is beautiful. Looks a lot like Finn, in a way.
I noticed the resemblance between the two from one of the first pictures you put up. Good genes.
