As any owner of a reef tank knows, you have to vigilantly control the temperature and the pH balance or all your creatures will die. Real coral reefs are so big that they can sustain lots of localized die-offs that occur from natural variations in water temperature and acidity. But, when the water is hotter than it has ever been whole reefs can die out. I see this happening, and then I look at the condition of our politics, and I just don’t know what the fuck to do. Even if humans weren’t responsible for this, it would be in our interest to figure out how to cool the planet a couple of degrees. Wingnuts ever think about that?

This is not to be confused with the Tube Sock Holocaust.
But that might mean diverting a few federal dollars from defense contractors and we couldn’t have that.
They won’t even agree to raise taxes for roads. I doubt this is a pressing concern for them (even though this is the start of the food chain we’re talking about).
Heat is only a part of the problem. Increased pollution of the ocean also stresses coral reefs.
Wingnuts have decided that this a game, there is a team called the tree-huggers, and they are against them. Now, the industries most responsible are encouraging them and cheering them in that attitude. But most arrived at their contempt on their own.
Or…aliens are taking the planet down, brick by brick.
Which is the only answer that really makes any sense
Except, of course…there aren’t any aliens.
Right?
Riiiiiight…

naaahh, so much easier to just invade another country
The oceans are the heartbeat of the planet.
Go here to see one of my friend`s coral reef tanks.
The image is a composite of ten shots I took of his 14 foot long, 1000 gal. reef. It`s a world class display.
Now imagine it dead.

So i guess the Christian Talibans are right after all.
Sigh.
It’s been such a lovely bunch of coconuts.

Mr. Gilroy,
OT
I`m still hoping to come see you play your music in LA.
I would like to know if you have a schedule I could refer to.
No gigs scheduled in the LA area as of now. When there are some, I’ll post them.

The earth is currently experiencing the most rapid extinction of organisms in it’s history. More rapid, apparently, than the permian extinction which exterminated 90%+ of ocean species. Current thinking is that the permian event was caused by rapid global warming and oceanic acidification…
Much of this extinction is currently being caused by habitat destruction, over-fishing, pollution. Catastrophic climate change will be like lighting the afterburners on our rapid flight into mass extinction, which will be very unpleasant for life on earth, to put it mildly.
I get to watch it everyday. This year is like 2005, the water is too warm, 84.9 today. The brain coral is stressed and turning blue. The other corals are all ill too, with white spots looking like measles on the elkhorn. In a few days it will be bone white. About 75% of it got knocked out in ’05. What is left was already sick.
The wingnut world view is focused on now and the past, not the future. So disheartening.
