I think it’s hilarious that barely half of Louisiana Democrats support Charlie Melancon in his bid to unseat Diaper Dave Vitter. I mean, just try coming up with a reason to keep David Vitter in office. Cuz he’s pro-life? So is Melanchon. Because he’s earned reelection? Really, how? By dressing up in diapers and having prostitutes spank him? It’s certainly not for accomplishing anything. He tells us how to live our lives and then goes and does the opposite in his own life. If he had some freezer cash, he’d win 80% of the vote.

who are they supporting instead?
According to the link, 34% of Dems in Louisiana are in fact supporting Vitter.
Le sigh.
Waiting to see how this is Obama’s fault.
It really depends on Louisianans’ perception of Obama’s response to the BP oil leak as to whether it’s Obama’s fault.
I think that in this case it’s pretty much a matter of local issues.
Aren’t a solid chunk of “Louisiana Dems” essentially Republicans, but are Dems for reasons of “Tradition” the way it works in Appalachian states?
It seems that way. They are basically Dixiecrats who never switched registrations.
States like Lousiana are hopeless. Then again, the national party wrote them off long ago. Just like South Carolina.
Thanks for tying one hand behind our backs. The GOP has not written off any state, including CA and MA. And they point to the willingness of Democrats to lampoon and write off the South to get Southern white voters to vote for them and against their own economic interests.
Look at South Carolina. That doesn’t speak well for Democrats, does it? I wasn’t saying it was hopeless. I am saying the national party(Hi, Tim Kaine!!) does.
There are several races in South Carolina that with a little support and effort could break for Democrats.
The governors race – the Tea Party candidate has caused the state chamber of commerce to endorse the pro-business Democrat.
SC-02 Rob Miller has been mobilizing support in his campaign against Joe “You Lie” Wilson. Any additional support through ActBlue would be appreciated.
Likewise for Jane Dyer in the open seat in SC-03. Of course, I have an ulterior motive in wanting to see Democrats win this one. This is the district that I grew up in, when William Jennings Bryan Dorn was Congressman.
The other critical race is defending John Spatt’s seat (SC-05).
Altogether some opportunities for the first time in a long while.
Dontcha know? That D stands for “devil”, and the religious folks in Louisiana would rather vote for a baby (ain’t he cute in that diaper) than one of them socialist Democrats.
Once again. This election is not about public opinion. It’s about who can get the most people to the polls on election day.
Also, I don’t know how much media campaign has been unleashed against Vitter yet. It’s not likely that all Louisiana voters know about Vitters private life.
And finally, the state that elected Huey Long and Edwin Edwards has a different idea of what “character” means than the rest of the country.
Good ol’ Huey. Awhile back I emailed my dad some of my favorite of Huey’s quotes, as I was reading them in Schlesinger’s “The Politics of Upheaval”:
well .. at least we know Ralph Nader wasn’t the first high-profile person to claim that there wasn’t much difference between elected Democrats and Republicans
and yet there IS a difference, and it’s actually an important one. this generally applies more at the national level than the state level, because the state parties have to be a little more responsive to constituencies.
essentially it is this: Democrats are useless, but the Republicans are malevolent.
Given the choice, I opt for useless.
I agree with you!! I’m just pointing out that what Nader gets ripped constantly for isn’t anything new. Hell, we need more Huey Longs(minus the corruption, obviously) in the Democratic Party
Cain’t have one widout the other. Sorry there, Calvin.
Like the man said…he wuz a dynamiter.
Whut that means?
He didn’t say “Please.” Now…if you don’t say please then you need force.
Physical force, money force, fear force…some kinda force. The so-called law abidin’ citizens ain’t gonna support you or give you money. Too busy stealin’ legally. So y’gotta steal it to seal it.
Thieves don’t say please.
They just do it.
But…sometimes that’s th’ only way to do it.
Word.

P.S. In a criminal society, the honest man is criminalized.
Yup.
It was that way in Huey Long’s Louisiana and now it’s that way in the entire Untied States of Omertica.
Yup.
Watch.
Hell…gotta love everywhere.
Throughout human history, the winners have attempted to keep the losers in a state of permanent fealty. Permanent poverty, permanent degradation, permanently powerless.
Then when some of the stronger losers kick over the traces using any means necessary, the establishment types waggle their jowls and shake their fingers at the lawlessness of it all.
Hell…look at the theft that has been (partially) uncovered in the PermaGov/Corporate/Intel/Military system today. It’s mostly “legal”, because they jigger the law to make it legal. And they have the nerve to demonize Fidel Castro or some local pol representing a poorish constuituency who started out trying to get things done legally, hit the omnipresent whitewashed brick wall and tried to go around it.
Trllions in legal graft but reroute a couple of thousand here, a couple of thousand there trying to grease the system so that it actually does something?
Sometimes my disgust for what is happening here just overwhelms me.
Time to go exercise.

I can draw only one conclusion from this. I think a lot of Louisianans — and this evidently cuts across party lines — really admire the Vitter spirit — the courage to dress up in diapers and get spanked by prostitutes. I mean, come on, it’s a free country! A lot of folks in Louisiana have been doing stuff like this for years — in private — but I expect the whole thing will be coming out in the open pretty soon. Kind of like one big Mardi Gras all year round.
So I guess he’s just dressing up as a King Cake baby. You know- for Mardi Gras, yeah. That’s it.
Laissez les bons temps roulez.
Half of his voters will vote for him because of the R after his name. The other half will vote for him because he’s a party sort of guy.
Sort of reminds me of when Wilbur Mills made headlines partying with an Argentine stripper and wound up drunk in the Reflecting Pool. Conventional Washington analysis was that he was dead meat. However, he was re-elected handily. Seems that folks in his district just felt that, “Wilbur’s just a good old boy.”
hey,
I’m from New Orleans, and ya’ll know how we do, and I still wouldn’t vote for Diaper Dave
Well, I know one place that probably could care less about Diaper Dave, and that New Orleans. Having lived there all my life before katrina, I can tell ya, New Orleans, and parts of Baton Rouge are like a spot of blue in the sea of red that is Louisiana.
The voters in New Orleans, tend to vote based on “name recognition” and community involvement. That’s what explains Bill Jefferson before he became Dollar Bill, and if he had never been indicted, I’m telling ya he woulda beat the crap out of Cao.
It’s for this reason why I think Cao is toast. The dude running for Jefferson’s seat, is a local boy, African American, and has run before and served, I believe, on the city council. I’m gonna make it my mission to get as many people from my ole 9th ward neighborhood to GOTV.
And don’t forget ol’ Gov. Edwin Edwards famous quote:
“The only way I can lose is if I’m caught in bed with either a dead girl or a live boy.”
Faced with opponent David Duke (KKKer turned GOP), his bumper stickers said: Vote for the crook. It’s important.
