Watch it not because it’s Margaret Cho who I love, or because it’s Dancing with the Stars (which I hate) but because of the message she delivered to a national audience that it is time to stand up and put a stop to the bullying and gay bashing that has led to an absurdly high gay teen suicide rate:
I applaud her for her standing up for the LGBT community. Not an easy thing to do with the hate patrol on the right making gay bashing a national sport. You will notice that while some of the audience applauded her promotion of the LGBT community, others booed her. But if you don’t stand up against the hate from the Beck Tea Party Palooza nothing will ever change for the better:
Even though she regularly ranked low, Cho tells Us she was “proud” of her time on the show. During her last dance, the samba, on Monday, she wore a rainbow ensemble for gay pride.
“I’m just so excited that we got to wear the rainbow colors and really represent and dance about pride,” she says. “That’s so important. I’m so honored to be in the presence of such amazing people and dancers. I had a great time. I’ll miss … the camaraderie and the costumes.” […]
“Now I realize that someone can say something, and it can stick with you for your whole life,” she tells Us. “We should never give people that power. Nobody should ever give anybody that power and that’s why I wanted to reach out to kids and people who have been bullied. You don’t have to give anybody that kind of power. You really don’t. When you have a moment when you can share that with so many people, it’s very powerful, and I’m so happy I got to do that. Our message really came from the heart.”
