It seems to me to be rather mundane to kill your enemies in battle. It may require courage and ingenuity, but it’s your job. What’s exceptional is putting your own safety at unnecessary risk in order to save your buddies. Now, these two things are not mutually exclusive. You might, for example, run through crossfire to take out a machine-gun nest that is doing grave damage to your squad. In a case like that, you are killing your enemies in order to protect your buddies. On the other hand, maybe you didn’t take out the machine-gun nest but instead you exposed yourself to fire in order to drag your wounded buddies to safety. Putting your own life at risk in order to save someone else is what heroism is all about. So, why do conservatives dismiss such bravery as “feminized” and unworthy of celebration?
