It’s been a really busy week around here…I am definitely looking forward to the weekend. So is Finny.. 🙂
Hopefully the sunny weather we’re having today will continue through Sunday. I want to spend some time in the yard, cleaning up and mulching.
What’s everyone else up to?
Good morning CabinGirl! Looks as if we’re going to be soggy here for a couple of days. If the rain helps produce more lovelies like the ones above, I really don’t mind. Hope it holds off for you so you can get your outdoorsy stuff done;-)
Apparently we have until about noon tomorrow for the outdoorsy stuff, and a second chance at it on Sunday. 🙂
‘morning CG! Saturday is supposed to be a washout. Sunday will be better. One half weekend is better than none I suppose.
Just wait ’til our corporate overlords finally reinstitute feudal servitude. We’ll be lucky to get a half hour!
😉
And the required reply will be: Yes sir! Thank you sir!
Speaking of servitude, errol laid this very real bit of history on me earlier today:
“ID, found this impressive Indiana-related story on GOS today, very moving
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/04/14/967097/-What-did-the-old-do-in-the-Olden-Days“
pretty horrifying – but I do think it’s where Koch et al. would like to take us
Wishing you & the whole pond a lovely Good Morning, soon to be afternoon.
🙂
Here, our first daffodils are opening; the tree swallows have returned, with other fair-weather neighbors, checking out the bird houses. The deer that traveled upland for the winter are starting to head back down. The cats are out, the snow has gone, aside of dirty patches here & there. Now we see what’s underneath. There’s much cleaning up to do, especially from the great willow trees as old as the farm itself. We planted some seed yesterday, more to do before the big rainstorm headed our way. Up here on the mountain it could be snow. Heh.
Also, too: I’m still not on Facebook, MySpace, SpaceFace,Twitter, Tumblr, Tweaker, or Squeaker, or Sweater.
Then I guess Dopey, Sneezy and Sleepy are out of the question?
That’s right.
Doc is more accessible, but I can’t afford it.
I hope the weather gods are feeling kindly and let you continue to enjoy the signs of spring. I’m loving watching spring slowly emerge here — the dogwoods just started flowering yesterday.
We’re quite a bit behind you, Andi — but yes, I’m having a great time watching the season take shape. I’m reborn as a ten-year-old every year.
🙂
I’m still a bit away from my favorite moment. We call it The Green Day — that day when you realize you feel so absolutely enveloped in green that even the air has a tinge of the color.
Oh yes — I know that day too! We usually see that kind of day in early June. I remember it from my NYC days, too — but I’ve always been a sensitive child.
🙂
Today feels about as far from the Green Day as Hallowe’en. Windy & grey, about 35F. Not nice.
The Green Man awakens from his winter slumbers.
Huh and all this time I thought all that it just was turkey hunters thrashing through the woods.
If you glimpse a turkey hunter wearing antlers, its probably him;-)
Iirc, that would be a nude turkey hunter wearing antlers .. sporting heavy equipment.
😉
lol~ I believe you’re correct on all attributes.
great link!
It’s 38 here right now and only warming to the 50s but the temps are going back up to 60s right away so I don’t think that will slow things down here.
We should have our green day late April or early May. I’m sorry you have to wait all the way till June.
I don’t mind waiting. Just wish the weather would warm up a little. Looks like 30s & 40s with dank all week.
Thank Gaia for daffodils.
CabinGirl,
Sorry to jump in here but our Finny wants to say “Hi” to your Finny.
Hi everyone.
It has been kind of hectic here lately. This week, full time training all week – which is OK, unless you then have to come in extra early and stay late to keep up with the regular work.
Anyway, training completed, beautiful and sunny outside – I’ll call it a day…
I’d like to call it a day, too, ask — but it’s only noon!
Sincerely hope you don’t let your hectic schedule hamper your enjoyment of the springtime world in any way!
we got another 8″ of snow from last night into this afternoon.
I’ll definitely set a late season x-c skiing record for April.
And we’re about 10 days short of 6 months from the first snow, last Oct 25th.
OMG, I am SO NOT complaining about our rain this weekend now. 🙂
I hope it melts quickly.
your comment got a belly laugh out of me!
Highs Sat – Tues 40-43F so maybe some will melt, but then 20% chance of Snow again on M & T.
Pretty crazy all right!
I just hope it all melts slowly enough not to cause any more flooding.
Is your friend’s house still doing okay?
As far as I know it is, but we haven’t talked today yet.
I think the Red River of the North’s level is dropping fast enough that, say an inch equivalent in rain, this recent snow accumulation shouldn’t aggravate the flooding situation.
There’s probably less than an inch of rain per 8″ snow accumulation. I think the watershed got less snow, so he should be OK.
I’m “on call” however, if there’s any impending crisis.
I’m really glad to hear that the levels are dropping and no flooding is imminent.
I saw your comment in the old cafe. I love roaming through that archive — Hohenberger did have a great eye. He’s especially good at capturing the sense of a person in a photograph.
Wishing you & your friend the very best, NDD.
corrected the number rating here, was wondering where those strange 8’s came from. falling asleep at the keyboard on friday night.
Argh!!!
Looks sunny and dry today – huge amount of rain yesterday.
I see some patches of blue sky here too. 🙂 But it seems really chilly this morning, so I’m hoping it warms up a bit.
We had thunder with our deluge. I’m glad it’s all over.
Our weather oracle says 65 and sunny. Sadly, today is bathroom drywall replacement day for an area by the tub that rotted due to a small, unseen leak. No garden stuff for me:(
ID! Can’t you do this on a day when it’s not a sin to stay indoors?
?
My rather poor spackling skills and the drying time required before I can paint, coupled with company arriving Fri. dictate my beginning today. If all goes well, it won’t take much more than a couple of hours and I’ll be able to soak up some sun and get my hands in the dirt before the day is over.
I really hope you can, ID. Life’s too short to spend lotsa time spackling.
Guess I should stop procrastinating and get to it.
Fellow procrastinator sympathizes. Let’s jump right in together: you tend to the bathroom & I’ll go clean up willow branches.
OK!
I suspect Family Man might say we’re not procrastinating nearly enough. I compromised and set up my drywall & trim cutting area outdoors. It was lovely here. Got to get a photo of the patch of brilliant little yellow flowers that are nearby.
Please do! Personally, I’d love to see ’em. Winter’s taking so long to depart here; all is still mainly grey & brown, despite the new daffodil buds. It’s snowing tonight.
I’m having a related problem, alas. When bathtub drain becomes slower, water appears at baseboards 5 or 6 feet away from tub. Not looking forward to trying to solve this. Doing something several months back I think the plumber really messed something up.
Ruh roh! That’s where my problem was showing up too. It rotted the lower part of the drywall and the baseboard as well. Must have been leaking for quite some time to do in the baseboard. Of course it was on the back side, so we didn’t notice until the wall paint began to bubble.
Got a plumber to take care of the leak last week.
did the plumber tear out the wall to find the leak? I’m not looking forward to any of it, but especially not looking forward to how much they have to tear up to find the problem.
We have an access panel on the bedroom wall behind, so he didn’t have to tear out any wall. Unfortunately for us, the water from the leak didn’t stay in the location of origin:(
It never does.
I spent part of the day repairing caulking adjacent to the threshold. At least I could see the outside. 😉
Ho, people! Very bad news from the Raleigh area today. Have we heard from SN?
How about Family Man?
Not too bad here on the mountain. Heavy rains yesterday, much greening & happy flowers. I’d imagine there’s flooding down in the valley.
SN has been posting on FaceBook this morning. I haven’t seen anything from FM for a couple weeks. He was having ‘puter problems so I’m hoping that’s his biggest worry aside from George.
Good news about SN! Thanks, Jim.
Hey there! We’re fine here, just some big trees down in my son’s yard downtown and he’s still without power. Three little boys died about 2 miles from us.
WW, tried to email you but your inbox is full. Wish I was that popular. 🙂
Glad to hear you came through ok. What a shame the little ones died.
Hey! Thanks for checking in!
I am so sorry to hear about what’s happened to your neighbors. So pleased that your family is ok!
Sorry about the email. Maybe the problem was my new address (see email!).
In any case, good to hear from you!

going to ponder that soothing pic instead of feeling stressed at work today.
Did it work?
It did work, thanks! might even carry over to today.
Ah ~ simple doggy pleasures;-)
That looks like fun!
That activity will have to wait for me until the water warms up a bit!
Some hot weather and a cool creek sound sp appealing right now!
Your creeks* must be much bigger than ours — the most you could do in the ones are around us is soak your feet.
* that’s a lake in the photo.
We have more creeks than lakes around here.
I can’t believe Finn let me sleep in this morning…I really needed it. Good thing I’m WFH today. 🙂
Your good sleep was balanced out by our lack thereof — the storms here got very loud about 3 a.m. and didn’t get quiet until about 4:30 a.m. by which time we’d given up on falling back to sleep.

Hah! Ya you betcha! Now there’s real squirrel huntin’ doggie!
Now when that pup gets to the upper branches and jumps from tree to tree…
OMG! That is hystericall!
Little electric yellow flowers mentioned yesterday.
Nothing like that out in the woods but the spring beauty, rue anemone, and toothwort are positively lush this year — I can’t remember them every being this abundant.
No doubt that it’s because of all that snow and rain. We’ve got even more rain even as we speak.
Glub glub .. gurgle ..
Well said.
We’re getting more rain too. It seems like it will never stop…we had a nice day Sunday, and then it was back to the gloom again.
CG, I see that Booman’s looking for new focus for the blog. Maybe he could follow our lead & just complain about the weather. I can see the subject lines now:
Raining Again.
Finny Now Dances In Puddles.
Sunshine Today, But Stupid Continues.
🙂
Sunshine comes and goes but stupid is forever.
We have been getting a lot of rain — it stormed a good part of last night. And it looks like we’ll be getting a lot more as there are storms in the forecast from today through at least Tuesday.
Beautiful! I want some! What are they? Maybe I can find seeds/plants.
Can’t get up close enough here to tell.
I got them at a spring plant sale at a local hardware store about 5 years ago, IIRC. Don’t remember the name, but I’ll see if I can find the little plastic plant ID & care thingy that came in the pot. I rarely throw a pot away, just recycle them with new plant diggings for friends. I’m a horrible collector of stuff like that, as if you couldn’t tell, but my brother, who does environmental sculpture when the mood strikes, is much, much more stuff storage challenged than I;-)
One example from my brother’s yard
I finally found the name of the yellow flowering plant in the photo. Its Basket of Gold, Golden Alison or Aurinia saxatilis.
And it’s catching a basket of rain.
After the 2 inches of rain we got last night, this hump is probably a class 4 rapids now.

Its lovely! And is that a tiny canoe I see going down the rapids?
I sure hope not … because here’s a picture from this morning and look what happened to the log that was across the creek:

That water must have been quite the raging torrent right after the height of the storm.
And it’s still raining here. Our reservoir is beyond full.
Rain has stopped here for now but there’s plenty more in the forecast over the next week. I’d love to see us all get some dry weather.
The view this morning.
However, nearly all of the white stuff was gone by sunset,
as it wasn’t that deep, and we had a 45F high for the day.
That’s a horrifying picture — I really think you shouldn’t have posted it where young children (or old geezers) might see it and be scarred for life.
Yeah, seeing that same view Oct 25th last fall was the real beginning of this “horrifying” experience.
Now that I know, of ol’ geezer sensitivities… I shall endeavor to be more circumspect in revealing the more “chilling” aspects of ND’s weather!
Four more days and it will be 6 mos worth. Ackkk!
Six months! OMFSM! Words cannot possibly convey the depth of my sympathy.
Thank you kindly for your deep expression of sympathy.
Another old timer saying is, (supposedly covers lots of nefarious situations, but particularly for ND weather,) “It’ll put hair on your chest.”
However, if there was any truth to that at all, I’d be roaming the plains as a prairie yeti;)
NDD,
That`s pretty horrific, but how about this.
Remember when you were here & walked into my neighbor`s house by mistake.
I told him he was lucky you didn`t kill him as you were a member of special forces.
I went into his house to bring a package in that I`d accepted from UPS & found him dead.
I had thought he was off on a gig, since he`s often on tour as a roadie for Pat Benatar.
With Teri on the phone with 911, she was asking me, “are you sure he`s dead?”
I told her he was as cold as a thawed chicken & stiff as a board.
Teri then said, “don`t touch the body & don`t displace anything”.
Seeing as he was half naked,(the bottom half) I disregarded the 911 orders & covered his lower body with a towel to give him a little dignity in death.
He`d been dead for over two days.
I can`t seem to get some distance between myself & the grim reaper.
It`s been almost two years now that people have been dropping dead around me. It`s killing me. (pun)
A guy noticed a contest in the local paper for who could write the best pun.
He submitted ten entries hoping one would win him the prize , but no pun in ten did.
Happi looks great & I hope you aren`t affected by the flooding to come.
Well, that’s too bad about your neighbor. He seemed to accept my wrong door excuse pretty well at the time. And, it’s a damned good thing I have one of those iron clad alibis, having not left ND for way too long now.
No danger from floods in my neck of the prairie. But those living on the rivers have had their share of troubles this year. However, my friends in Fargo are in the clear now, and the dikes are coming down. Got my share of muscle building with regard to that last Tuesday afternoon. Great that my two N CA friends (former NDs) were in town and helped out with that.
Raining here at the farm now, after gusts of 40+ mph all afternoon, which blew off my chimney cap earlier. Hopefully there won’t be too much rain water collecting in my wood stove.
OK, NDD,
Your alibi checks out.
You`re in the clear.
Glad you are not in the line of fire regarding flooding.
Keep your wood dry & please extend my regards to the lovely Ms. NDD
You’re just trying to frighten us all, aren’t you? 🙂
Could also be a WAIL for sympathy…
It has to be coming to an end soon, right?
The winter of 1996 was our unending massive snow winter around here…it dumped and dumped and dumped on us, right up to nearly mid April. I wanted to cry the last time it snowed…
It’s really pretty, but I’d bet you’re sick of it by now. I love that wide open expanse of sky.
The old timers had an expression, “You can’t eat the view.” In my case, they’re wrong. I do “eat” the view I have from this location.
And yeah, 6 months of this is getting to be quite enough, already.
Everything is turning green around here this week. Looks lovely. 🙂
The Finny has a Dr. appointment this morning – time to find out how tall he is and how much he weighs. I’m guessing he’s around 25 pounds.
And of course, I am superbusy at work today with deadlines…looks like another long day ahead. I am so looking forward to my 3-day weekend.
How’s everyone else? Did it stop raining out your way yet?
No rain here now but it’s cold. We’ll see the 20s tonight. Isn’t it almost May?
We’re off to the oral surgeon in Indy for a pre-surgery conference. Poor Mrs. ID:(
🙁
Hope you took to Shapiro’s for some comfort food.
We were seriously considering it until the surgeon cruelly dumped us out of his Carmel office at 3:15, the beginning of rush hour. I was horrified to see traffic load on I-465 and immediately took to the east side neighborhoods to search for a way south. We wound up eventually in Beech Grove and thence home. No Shapiro’s this time around:(
I just don’t know how people put up with city traffic every work day of their lives <shakes head in disbelief>.
In other news, looks as if Mrs. ID’s implant surgery(s) begin about the 2nd week in May.
Rush hour at 3:15? Sounds like a Bay Area traffic day, and I’m sorry to hear you missed Shapiro’s. I’ve been craving a trip to Katz’s, myself.
I hope all goes well with the surgery next month.
Given that I’ve worked at home since 1989 and you’ve been walking to work or working at home as well, I suspect either one of us would be horrified to have to commute to work every day, even if the traffic wasn’t all the bad.
I had a dentist appoint at 8:00 a.m. this week and I was completely irritated by having to wait through three lights at the junction of 46 and 11 in Columbus.
Sympathies to Mrs. ID for the coming unpleasantness.
I’m looking forward to the server upgrade; it’s been taking forever to open the “new story” page and post anything. Anyone else having the same problem?
Yep. I had a terrible time with the Friday Foto Flogging last week.
Yep, posting a new diary can sometimes be a very frustrating experience.
Yeah, happened with the last flog I published as well. And some days I can’t get the site to load at all.
I’d like to wish me a happy day without rain but that doesn’t look too likely.
Yep, it looks like a good day for indoor activity:
We’ve got it here. Again. Not a day without recently. It was nice earlier though.
click for larger
Nice (May) apple!
beautiful, I love it!
Yet more rain here. And we’re expecting thunder showers here later on. Sigh.
Chance for more rain here – 90% today, 100% tonight. White River flood plain was under water last Thursday when we went north for the day. Reminds me of an old Johnny Cash song.
“How high’s the water, mama?
Two feet high and risin’
How high’s the water, papa?
Two feet high and risin’
We can make it to the road in a homemade boat
That’s the only thing we got left that’ll float
It’s already over all the wheat and the oats,
Two feet high and risin'”
I just checked the rain gauge — just over 3 inches since noon yesterday.
Wow! Its probably 3 feet high & risin’ now. Hope I-65 isn’t under water yet. Mrs. ID’s surgery is tomorrow in Carmel.
It felt like that didn’t it — we got another 2 inches in that late morning deluge. Overnight amount was piddly, thank the FSM.
Are people are getting nervous about Salt Creek?
Nothing on the Road Conditions site about I-65 (sure are lots of road closing to the south of us) so it looks like you’ll be okay.
We had on and off light rain and mist a couple of days last week, but Sunday and Monday were sunny here in rural ND. I could still find some snow hiding out in the trees, but it’s pretty much gone from sight.
Today we celebrated our first 60+F day, with a bonfire and a few New Belgium beers. The frogs are croaking out in the slough, and we’ve had our first sighting of mosquitoes 🙁 well at least all signs point to spring having arrived, finally.
Tuesday we will disassemble the sand bag dike around my friend’s house in north Fargo.
Congrats on the arrival of spring, the 60s temps, and — best of all — the removal of the sand bags.
It’s sunny and warm here, finally. It will be almost 80 here later. Woohoo!
Sound very fine — sounds like spring is emphatically arriving.
Now with green.

Good morning, Andi!
Is that a recent photo? If so, we’re way ahead in terms of spring. Everything is green already for some time here. High 60s/low 70s pretty much every day the last several weeks and hardly any rain.
Morning ask. I’d love to have your weather — that picture is from a week ago (it’s much greener now but the oak trees and beeches still aren’t fully out) which I think was the last time we had a sunny day. We’ve had rain every day since and with over 6 inches so far this week and more on the way.
I get regular updates from curly; it’s certainly been much better here.
Just planning a trip to NY for mid/late May, it’s been a while…
love it. we’re getting trees like that around here now. very energizing.
Early morning rain here. It’s nice now if a little humid.
We’re back home after Mrs. ID’s surgery yesterday & she’s resting. The surgeon said it went extremely well. I’m grateful. Didn’t have to ford any flood waters to get there, either.
Great news. Hope Mrs. ID recovers quickly.
Thanks Andi!
Another day, another flash-flood/tornado watch (sigh).
Same here, re flash floods. No tornados yet.
The rain’s been incredible. The ground’s so saturated that we’ve got peepers on the lawn! I welcome it (April showers etc), but I’ll be happy for some clear weather. The list of outdoor chores just grows & it’s all time-sensitive!
Glad to hear surgery went well for Mrs. ID. Also, thanks very much for info on your pretty yellow flowers!
The ground around here barely looks like ground — it’s so wet and swampy that I (almost) wouldn’t be surprised to find alligators chasing the squirrels.
lol! I know what you mean.
Tonight we still have frogs, along with a little bear — only about 4′ high at the shoulders — taking a leisurely bird seed snack. I told it to go away & it did. Soon to return, I’ll bet.
At least an alligator wouldn’t raid our feeders!
Frogs and toads we got loads but a bear is beyond rare.
Once upon a time there were wolves, bears, and panthers in this area but they were extirpated long ago.
I had no idea of your poetic gifts, Andi!
Amazing to think you’d be without bears in your woods. They’re so common here, they’re like very large chipmunks.
🙂
Common here too … once upon a time. There’s even a place up the road a piece called Bear Wallow.
Indiana managed to clean out nearly all of its larger mammals (the last of the elk went some time after my teens). They’ve very successfully reintroduced deer, turkeys, and otters. The bobcat are apparently making their way back on their own but are still very rare. I’d love if some wolves would come back too. But I guess the coyotes that have moved in their absence wouldn’t think much of that idea.
No, they wouldn’t.
We’ve got plenty coyotes here, too. They can actually be a helpful species. Back when I was living at The Sieve, I didn’t have running water from November to May. Naturally, I needed to do something with my personal waste, so I carried the magic bucket about 20 yards down the hill & dumped it. The coyotes always cleaned it up — I could tell by the tracks.
They never bothered my cats, either.
🙂
I’m always a bit worried about our dogs and the coyotes getting into it but so far the only head-to-head meeting (that I know about) went off without any problems. It was a single coyote and they all just sniffed each other and then coyote casually trotted off.
I’ve been out planting things in between raindrops. Got a few flowers & strawberries in. Its now looking like we might have a few hours of sunshine over the weekend! Thanks for the good wishes:)
Good morning!
The forecast for today and tomorrow promises much needed rain (we’ve hardly had any precipitation to date this year). The sun doesn’t care, though, about the forecast – still shining relentlessly and suggesting we have summer.
A little sunshine sounds delicious right now! Enjoy while you can.
And here it’s rained nearly every day. It’s misting even as we speak. Enjoy your sun!
Hi everyone. I talked with Family Man. He and George are both okay. The recent tornados/storms that went through AL missed them, thankfully. He’s still without a computer though — his new old one stopped working — so he hasn’t been able to get online. He’s hopping to get it fixed soon.
O,
Thanks for the update on George, and FM too.
Thanks for the report, Miss O. Hope Springtime is finding you.
Hi Olivia,
That’s good to hear.
I occasionally stop by his FB page, but there have been no updates for a really long time. Noticed that his niece posted his phone #, though.
ask, can you provide a link? I may call and try to help him out.
Hi b2,
Here’s the link.
Thanks!
Thanks Olivia! Good to hear it! Too bad about his computer.
Good morning,
Finally, some much needed rain last night, though it looks like the sun will be back for the weekend.
Morning ask.
We got very little of very little needed rain yesterday. But the sun was out most of the day (first time in a week) so yay for both of us.
I ran through a torrential downpour on 46E yesterday afternoon, but it must have been very localized. Mrs. ID said it hadn’t rained at our place at all. Here’s to sunniness for all today!
We had three thunderstorms yesterday between (approx) 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. — very hard rain but the longest one lasted about 15 minutes and one of them took place entirely in sunshine and blue skies.
Happy May Day Eve! I’m still a bit swamped, and will likely be so for another week and a half. Then I get a respite. Managed to avoid the worst of the flooding and tornadoes that ravaged my region recently. Mother Nature has certainly kept it interesting. Hope all of you are well.
Happy May Day!
I’m very glad to hear you didn’t get hit by those awful storms.
Off to read your links below.
Good to hear that all’s well with you. Hope blueneck got through unscathed as well.
Same here.
My annual May Day post is up at NFU and ECFS. In solidarity.
Still without dsl, still on dial up. Waves (slowly) to all. Sigh. At least it was a nice weekend otherwise.
I certainly empathize — we lose the satellite connection whenever it rains more than a drizzle and the dial-up is so painful, I’d almost rather not be on.
Hope it gets fixed soon.
Hint, hint CG.
