I wonder if it is true. I wonder if the GOP’s decision to block any and all nominees to head up the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will actually make it more likely that the president will recess appoint Elizabeth Warren. It makes sense. He either recess appoints, guts his own creation before it can get off the ground, or leaves the position unfilled. Since he’s pretty much compelled to choose the recess appointment option, he might as well choose the person who is setting the bureau up. The only downside is that she’d only be able to serve until the beginning of 2013. Unless, I guess, he recess appointed her again in the next Congress…

I had her as not having the votes before, but yeah…if they won’t appoint anyone, what does he have to lose? Not to mention a lot of the other nominees are getting out of the way, including the people I’ve had in mind for him to nominate (I’ve been increasingly thought he might appoint Sheila Bair, and she would be perfect).
Two thoughts for how to word that sentence, and they both got jumbled together. Oh well lol.
I don’t think he wants Warren.
I am pretty sure he does want her, and a recess appointment would work in her case because she is broadly popular. A lot of the “spin” is that she is a “liberal”, but in fact she is squarely for the middle class and she has considerable support among Republican voters. This means that the inevitable grousing by congressional Republicans would not have any great resonance with the voters, in fact, it could well have the opposite effect if the Dems care to play it that way.
It would be so easy to portray the GOP as being against the interests of the middle class (which they in fact are).
I do think that Geithner doesn’t want her, but so what? Geithner didn’t even want her as acting director, and that didn’t stop Obama from appointing her.
I think Obama yields to Geithner a lot. However, I must admit that Geithner being in a Democratic cabinet at all offends me greatly.
Obama yields to Geithner, or rather, to the forces Geithner represents, on many things. However, I don’t see where he he has ever yielded to him on Elizabeth Warren.
What about the rumor she might run for Senate? I haven’t heard any other competitive challenger for Brown.
since they’ve made it clear they won’t vote for anyone and will filibuster, it’s time to recess appointment Warren
In a word–no. he never wanted her in the first place but there was so much outcry that he reluctantly put her up. What I don’t get is why she is still hanging in there for the job. She’s gotten jacked around for over a year I think. She needs to tell Obama, recess appointment or I’m gone. Gotta give her credit for hanging around this long.
OMG! That old line. You do not know this. That is what you choose to believe because Obama has not called you up and personally told you he wants Warren. I suspect that you just prefer to think that. I know by your response where you typically read and comment.
Exactly right. I am so tired of people pretending to have knowledge that they don’t have.
There’s very little non-inferential evidence that he doesn’t want Warren. I actually think he doesn’t (see how Geithner helped bankers instead of people in Ireland here, but it’s pointless to argue that without proof.
and first comment too. making sure everyone reads that trollish nonesense
Doesn’t Geithner have some issue with her? Like she is honest and will do her job or something like that. A recess appointment would be great!
I think he will make a recess appointment. Twice if necessary. The closer to the election the more it will put the GOP in a box and the more it will please his base
