As I feared, Boehner can’t find the votes, doesn’t want to run to Hoyer to get them, and has backed out of a commitment to a grand deal. The orange bastard is caught on flypaper and he’s willing to set every dollar in the world ablaze to extract himself with his gavel intact. This is the kind of leadership you get from an adulterous drunkard with a record of passing out tobacco lobbyists’ checks to his colleagues on the House floor.

1.) Nice job, Politico, you Fox News Wannabe: For a few days, at least, it appeared that Republicans and Democrats could craft a historic bargain that would not only raise the debt ceiling but also cut away at the $14 trillion deficit.
2.) He has a way out, and it’s coming full circle (see number 3): “I believe the best approach may be to focus on producing a smaller measure, based on the cuts identified in the Biden-led negotiations, that still meets our call for spending reforms and cuts greater than the amount of any debt limit increase.”
3.) “Eric has always believed the Biden group identified between 2 and 2.5 trillion in spending cuts that could represent the framework for an agreement.”
They are going to pass the debt limit with no tax increases, as they “both agree” on those identified cuts. They’ll promise to come back to revenues later, perhaps when we discuss the next budget!
Would love to be proven wrong, though. Please, Mr. President, I beg of you: prove me wrong.
~House Democratic Caucus Chairman John Larson
The sooner the better. Don’t think the latest Republican generated “crisis” isn’t already freaking out small bussiness owners and hiring managers everywhere. The Republicans are flat out trying to wreck the economy any way possible.
A clean bill for the nations economy.
nobody thought ORANGE JULIUS could pass this without Dem votes.
he’s been chugging all day long, IMO, cause his Wall Street Masters will have none of it.
(shrug) republicans are who Americans voted for last time ’round, hence republicans are what Americans deserve.
Well…. A certain subset of Americans, at any rate.

My thoughts exactly. They wanted it, they got it.
Except for the fact that this will hurt so many Americans who did not vote these morons in. What really does make me laugh is all these rethug governors-Christie, Kaisch, Walker etc. who are killing their states who everyone thought would be TERRIFIC. At least Michigan has a recall effort for their rethug governor.
Maybe the NY Times will publish the adultery story now? (or did they already and I missed it?) seems there are many points at which his owners can pressure Boehner.
OT?: I usually enjoy the comment threads over at tpm, very funny small group of regular posters, but there’s a huge troll infestation going on over there about Paul Ryan’s 2 dinner partners and the two $350/ per bottles of wine for his $40 dinner. Looks like the have-mores are getting very defensive these days. http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/07/rep-paul-ryans-pricey-pinot-noir.php?ref=fpb
Lemme get this straight. Obama puts Medicare and SS on the table even though it will ruin him politically- and the dems said forget it (kind of)- in exchange for tax cuts. Does that about wrap it up? $4T.
So now Boner is having a hissy fit saying he only wants $2T in deficit reduction because he wants no tax cuts, just huge slash and burn spending cuts on so called entitlements?
So tomorrow’s shows will have all the dems on every show denouncing the GOP tactics of wanting to hoard zillions for their rich friends while kicking the middle class, seniors and poor to the curb (proposed by a DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENT). rriiiggghhht.
Is this a great country or WHAT???
Jesus. So the next step is obviously Obama capitulating and giving the rethugs exactly what they want-no tax cuts-and only $2T in entitlement cuts. Wonder how long the big cave in of the grand bargain will take? 1 day? 2? And then I will get my usual email asking for money for his re elections campaign and the hopey changy thingy.
And the job numbers suck.
Sorry. in exchange for tax HIKES.
Everytime we gain some traction here come the Repugs with the obstructionist crap. The budget and the debt ceiling are two recent examples. They are dead set on bringing this economy to a grinding halt.
When talk started about Obama putting SS and Medicare on the table I flashed back to the budget negotiations. I have post traumatic stress from that “compromise”. Sign every petition you get in your e-mail, call and write. Obama needs to hear us so he doesn’t give away the farm.
you should go back and take a look at what actually happened in budget compromise
He needs to hear us. On the budget the non-existent immediate spending cuts and extending unemployment benefits were righteous. I am still freaking about the 2% SS taxcut to share irresponsibility with the rich.
I am not an Obama basher but I want to keep him pressured and give him the political cover to tell these Repug cutthroats to back off.
to quote a classic joke, what do you mean “us”?
The left.
Whatever spending cuts happen here are going send us down the deflationary rathole to 20+% unemployment anyway, so to hell with it. We’re screwed. The party’s over. Long live the United States of Weimar.
Is this even news? Did we not know this was coming? #1. “Grand bargains” never work. #2. Even if they did, we shouldn’t want one anyway. Not with this congress.
This is all beginning to smell a lot like December. Instead of trading Bush tax cuts for payroll tax cuts, the President will trade non-entitlement spending cuts for more payroll tax cuts. Along with the ceiling raise, and free trade agreements in the Senate, and whatever else gets thrown in at the end.
Don’t mess with what works, I guess. Here’s hoping the payroll tax cuts work better in 2012 than they have in 2011. And I hope Republicans enjoy not raising any new revenues, because I look forward to Democrats beating the everlasting shit out of them on trying to destroy Medicare. No political cover on that one coming, dipshits. Best of luck.
Yup. My thoughts exactly its making me nervous because all this cutting is very bad for the economy.
People, lawdy lawd, PEOPLE, wake up. ‘R’s all good.
This is moving toward “$2 trillion” in phony spending cuts over ten years in exchange for a real $2 trillion debt-ceiling hike now.
Lets hope so.
I am confused now. Obama is threatening to veto any deal under 2 trillion dollars? Why is that? I assume he’d still accept a clean raise in the unlikely event it were offered? The phrase “grand bargain” only refers to the 4 trillion dollar deal? It doesn’t surprise me Republicans would prefer the smaller deal; they don’t really care about deficits, they just want to cut spending.
