I still blame John McCain. The Stupid was contained before he came along and weaponized it by selecting Palin as his veepee. Good luck getting the genie back in the bottle. We stuck with this crap for while.

Rove was vastly more important in weaponizing the stupid than McCain. McCain crossed the Rubicon, but it was Rove who mustered the army and marched them up to the river’s edge. That’s the hard work, constructing rhetoric and getting it out there. That’s the movement building. Once that’s done, somebody is bound to take it bigtime. The audience is just there, waiting, and the short term rewards are too easy.
So the man who believed he was entitled to be President, dammit! — the hero son of wealth and power, the guy who’d gotten pretty much whatever he wanted all his life, not only lost to a black guy from nowhere and nothing, but will be remembered by history chiefly for one of the most boneheaded, catastrophic veep picks of all time.
And he’s got to know it. He’ll never admit it, but he’s got to know how royally he screwed himself.
That’s a good start on the punishment he deserves.
He doesn’t know it. His kind are convinced that they are always right by birthright.
