The Republican base isn’t going to be cheering this:
The U.S. Supreme Court Thursday halted the execution of a black man convicted of a double murder in Texas 16 years ago after his lawyers contended his sentence was unfair because of a question asked about race during his trial.
Duane Buck, 48, was spared from lethal injection when the justices, without comment, said they would review an appeal in his case.
Two appeals, both related to a psychologist’s testimony that black people were more likely to commit violence, were before the court. One was granted. The other denied.
I don’t know what Antonin Scalia is doing messing around and interfering with Rick Perry’s ability to add another notch to his belt.
How do you think the Republicans would like it if we introduced evidence at their trial that yahoos with NRA stickers on their trucks are more likely to own and discharge a firearm?
I don’t want to make light of the seriousness of the crime here, but if you have a good set of evidence, you don’t need to be arguing that the proof the guy deserves the death sentence is because he’s black. Even in Texas, that’s pretty low.
Or, is he already up to 235?
I wonder if Rove called in a marker
How on earth does the death penalty actually work in Texas?
Murdering your ex-girlfriend and her lover? Crime of passion, I guess, merely life in prison?
But if a “doctor” says that black people need to be put down because of their innate tendency towards crime, all of the sudden the death penalty is back on the table? And that worked?
What in the fuck is wrong with Texas?
It didn’t work in Texas. It worked at the SCOTUS. And it still hasn’t worked. All he’s got is an appeal.
If Rick Perry was smart, and obviously he isn’t, he would pull a page out of Bill Clinton’s book and turn this into a victims’ rights issue.
