Does Brooks really think bourgeois paternalism would work? One could argue we have that now, and it’s not working at all. Did someone spread Santorum at Brooks’ Applebees salad bar?
When was the last time there was a President more bourgeois than Barack Obama?
I hate this fucking crap. And why is everybody in the blogosphere so obsessed with David Brooks all the time?
“… why is everybody in the blogosphere so obsessed with David Brooks all the time?”
I don’t know why everybody is, or if everybody on is. I’ll just speak for myself. For me it’s because David Brooks is almost incomprehensibly stupid. And by that I don’t mean that he’s not educated, I mean that his thought patterns are to truth, what tone-deafness is to music.
Hmmm….apparently not everyone agrees with little David.
I read this crap and I can confirm it’s embarrassing crap. Not so much for what he pretends to say, which is embarrassing enough, but the pretentiously empty way in which he says it. I honestly don’t know what Brooks means by bourgeois paternalism if it isn’t a kind of horrific nagging of the country as a whole by a ladies gardening society of gaseous and bloodless scolds like Brooks.
The complete last sentence;
“the depressing lesson of the last few weeks is the public debate is dominated by people who stopped thinking in 1975.”
Two things happened in the last few weeks. Planned Parenthood was dropped by Komen, and the Bishops freaked out over birth control. Both items were almost certainly long planned. Both attacked women. Both led to devastating public opinion losses by republicans who publicly took the sides attacking women.
This is what he is complaining about. Our ‘betters’ explained what was good for us, it was rejected. He wants the Bishops to be able to dictate our social norms, which would make us a better society.
Why the Bishops? Because as well as agreeing with him on birth control and abortion and slutty women, they agree with him on austerity economics. They are all republicans.
I thought the world ended when Milli Vanilli was exposed as a fraud.
HBO is premiering a new documentary on the Loving vs Virginia court case that made interracial marriage LEGAL in every state. Before Loving vs Virgina came aobut, it was illegal for Blacks and Whites to get married in a number of states. This documentary uses archival footage and interviews to let the Lovings tell their story.
It’s on right now.
The Loving Story
Virginiaia 1958. Interracial marriage is illegal, punishable by jail. It was the law in 24 states across the country. Newlyweds Mildred Jeter Loving (“colored” woman) and Richard Perry Loving (white man) arrested for committing the crime of mixed marriage.
They were convicted on felony charges and banished from Virginia. The spent the next 9 years trying to get home to Virginia.
Can ya imagine the number of people who may have NEVER been born to an interracial couple?
There may have been no President Barack Obama at all.
Bourgeois paternalism my ass.
I’m joe from Lowell. I know something about rebuilding an orderly community, and there isn’t any “bourgeois paternalism” about the United Teen Equality Center.

UTEC, Mr. Brooks? Oh, they’re the organization of community organizers and urban teenagers who negotiated a gang truce that declared the downtown – you know, the part of the city where the High School is located – to be neutral territory in which violence is not to be used.
What exactly did you do to rebuild any communities, Mr. Brooks?
When it comes to educating the fucking idiots who are GOPers, I think a little paternalism is called for. First candidate? David Brooks.
Can’t say I full agree wit him but I agree that everyone is going on about him just a bit too much!
