Mitt Romney is now a NASCAR fan. Anybody want to have a beer with him? Oh wait, I meant a diet coke …
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP)—Two days away from a critical primary in Michigan, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney detoured to Daytona International Speedway on Sunday.
Romney visited the track for a few hours before the scheduled start of the Daytona 500. He spoke briefly at the pre-race drivers’ meeting and spent time walking around the garage and pit areas, shaking hands and taking photographs with fans.
Asked if he would be rooting for something bad to happen to the No. 26 car being sponsored by Republican rival Rick Santorum’s campaign, Romney laughed, saying, “I hope all the cars have a good race.”
I suppose the fact that the biggest race of the season was rained out today had nothing to do with Romney’s appearance in Daytona and probably shouldn’t be mentioned by anyone (unless you’re Rick Santorum that is).
Romney was at Daytona last year and said he also has been to the track in New Hampshire. Does he follow the sport?
“Not as closely as some of the most ardent fans,” he said. “But I have some friends who are NASCAR team owners.”

this was priceless
lol; can Mittens say anything right?
Too bad the race wasn’t at Michigan International Speedway – Mitt could remark upon how the asphalt is always the right dryness here.
At least no one died on the last lap. #3
Better make that a caffeine-free Diet Coke unless you want to go to Mormon hell.
Was about to post this.
If he was there a few hours before the scheduled start he was pretty much alone.
The radar pretty much showed yesterday that the race wasn’t going to run today and pretty much the fans stayed in their hotels or went to Hooters. They weren’t at the track — that was clear from the TV shots (and a friend I spoke to who did actually try showing up).
Somehow this is will not have the same effect on NASCAR or Romney as it did when Reagan went to Daytona in 1984 when he was down in the polls.
NASCAR fans don’t use their guns on Varmint. Elmer Fudd does though.
It seems like Romney and Santorum are competing to see who can make the stupidest statements, scaring away potential support. In Mitt’s case, he’s just the worst campaigner ever, falling over himself in obsequiousness and looking foolish every step, or rather, stumble, of the way. Rick, on the other hand, cannot refrain from revealing his narrow-mindedness and intolerance. It’s getting just plain silly.
Romney and Santorum are like that guy on the old cartoon, where he was followed around by a rain-cloud. Invite these two bozos, and your event will be a disaster.
