Since we in the USA link health care with employment, this is the kind of situation some people find themselves in.
I went by my old school to see friends the day after the kids were gone for the summer and was talking with one of my fellow sixth grade teachers. He told me that his wife was quitting her job. I thought this was strange; they have twins who just finished their first year in college.
It seems that the Mom has worked at the community service agency long enough to qualify for partial health insurance. A few years ago the state of Indiana under our dear Republican governor forced schools to change the teachers’ contracts to require families to go on individual health plans if any family member could get insurance through their employer. The effect on my friends family would have been that because his wife could get dental and vision coverage, she would lose all other health insurance.
In some BizzaroWorld, I know this makes sense.
