Loyal readers will know that I’ve been calling Marco Rubio a crook ever since he announced himself as a candidate for the Senate. He’s a thief who stole quite a bit of money from the Florida GOP, which is why I always thought it was strange that the Florida GOP would support him. The easiest explanation (and it’s supported by looking at the sitting governor) is that they are all thieves, so one more doesn’t bother them. In any case, this is pretty basic. Rubio used the party’s credit card to fix his SUV, buy liquor, buy groceries, buy an Apple computer, buy lumber, buy his wife plane tickets, pay bills, etc. He’s a criminal. Why would the national party want him on the ticket when he stole money from the Florida state party? Because they’re all thieves, too?
First Read is just pussyfooting around the issue. Yes, they mention the $100,000 he racked up on the Florida GOP’s corporate American Express card, and his nearly $1 million in personal debt, but they don’t call him a crook or a thief, which is what he is.
You want to know what’s wrong with this country? We’re afraid to call people scoundrels and treat them accordingly.
I guess if the GOP wants to give him the money he’s legally not a thief. What’s really wrong with this country is that legality has driven the notion of ethics out of the picture. We don’t have scoundrels anymore — if you’re not a convict, you’re all good. Well, unless you’re not rich or powerful.
The party absolutely did not want him to have that money. Why would they? He stole it.
If they’re really so pissed, they’d be filing charges. It certainly puts them in a hard place when they’re doing their usual “law and order” screaming.
You might enjoy this. Particularly, the update.
it’s FLORIDA, that just elected an outright Medicare FRAUDIST of the highest order to become Governor.
Rubio is a grifter…no doubt about that
you know who’s not afraid to call people scoundrels and treat them accordingly?
the gop.
because they always have to find someone, anyone, to demonize.
While I completely agree with your point, I would like to suggest that you find a different term than “scoundrel”. Han Solo made that far too sexy for it to have the effect you intend.
Thief? Grifter? Oooh, how about welfare recipient?
Horse thief? Horse thief is still a bad thing, right? Not like grand theft auto which I believe is a video game.
I’m still fond of crook. It has such a nice historical ring.
How fucking impotent (GASP, there’s that word again, someone go tell joe from Lowell!!1!11!) must those poor midlevel bastards at the Florida GOP feel every fucking day when they see Rubio and have to glorify his rise knowing damn well he ripped them off and treated them like peons and marks on the way up.
That’s fucking pathetic. Those are pathetic excuses for human beings. And the major players are a bunch of gutless racists for excusing the grift all so they could “prove” their party isn’t completely bigoted against nonwhite Americans. “How can the GOP be anti-Hispanic? Look at Marco Rubio! He’s their new flagbearer!”
Rubio could probably kill a hooker, and they’d try to help him get away with it. Here’s a better idea: try not being the party of institutional racism. Then maybe you’d attract candidates who don’t want to run for office just to bilk the system and enrich themselves. Just a thought…
FTFY. There doesn’t seem to be a problem of calling all sorts of people, from President Obama to Graeme Frost scoundrels just so long as there’s no (R) after their last name.
