The Green Bay Packers got hosed last night because the regular NFL referees are in a labor dispute with the NFL owners and are not working. Instead, a bunch of high school and small college referees are doing the pro games, and they aren’t very good. They made a couple of ludicrous calls, including one on the final play of the game that wrongfully handed victory to the Seattle Seahawks. That’s a shame. But it’s laughable that Wisconsin’s Governor Scott Walker asked for the real refs to return and then insisted that it wasn’t a pro-union comment. Pay the professionals, who happen to be unionized, or horrible calls will continue to happen.

Too funny – made me laugh out loud.
That was a very hard game to watch.
I honestly don’t think the owners are anywhere near ready to crack. They’re not even bothering to explain themselves. If they have a shitty season they will brazen it out until next year. Plus there’s no way they lose money on this season and they know it. At that point the old refs will be broken or the new refs broken in.
Yeah, I think it was Steve Young who was quoted as saying that the demand for the NFL is inelastic.
As it is, I’m a baseball guy so I am not really bothered. It’s pretty funny to read about the refs talking about fantasy football when the rules actually prohibit refers from partaking in fantasy football for obvious reasons.
Too bad the players won’t walk out in support of their union brothers. That would put a quick end to this nonsense.
Isn’t that illegal thanks to Taft-Hartley?
What’ll the Owners do? Refuse to hire them back?
Fuck Taft-Hartley. Solidarity Forever!!

What, did you just take a Corporate Media course in “How to Hide the Fact that the Perpetrators are our Corporate Overlords”???
It should have read: because the NFL owners have locked out the regular referees in an attempt to slash their compensation.
This dispute is all about gutting pensions that refs have earned and Owners don’t want to live up to these agreements anymore.
This article from earlier this summer explains it well.

Attytood at dKos totally nails this in Shocked by the NFL ref fiasco? Where’ve you been the last 30 years?
Maybe, just maybe, the union busting GOP will one day lose the white guy vote. Probably not because they seem to keep getting dumber and dumber.
Yes by all means the players should do something, the owners should do something, omg someone out there do something.
As long as the TV broadcasts are watched, the game tickets are bought, the jerseys/team-crap are bought, nothing but what benefits the owners will be done. Not as long as the sucker’s keep sending train loads of cash. We can do something but we won’t.
