It’s very interesting to see how Rush Limbaugh’s comments about Sandra Fluke have started to upend the entire radio industry.

Well, well – it appears the “arc of the moral universe” finally begins to exert a bit of influence on that disgusting blob of useless tissue.
Also interesting that these advertisers were, in their own words, flying blind. Ahhh the dilema, do we put our money with the highest numbers ratings and assume we’ll get the most bang for our buck or do we tune in sometimes and decide maybe a more selective ad buy may give us sales while not tarnishing our brand? Decisions decisions decisions.
The term comments does not do justice here. He was relentless.
Here is a stupid question: Are we really sure that Limbaugh is being affected? That this is not just propaganda?
Don’t get me wrong – Limbaugh is one of the forces of evil in America today. I just want to be sure that this is not propaganda.
Right now .. it’s just the stations .. and Bain(yes, that one) getting the shaft .. because Rush’s contract runs another year or two.
It couldn’t happen to a more deserving person. Folks like Rush Limbaugh destroyed AM news radio.
It is so nice to see a bit of good news.
Yet here in the San Francisco Bay Area (!), we spend a good portion of our day with FOUR right-wing hate radio talk stations, and a single station which broadcasts liberal talk part of the day. That station used to be full-time liberal talk, but this year they started broadcasting Glenn Beck from 6-9 am, and reactionbary Christian financial advice jerk Dave Ramsey from 9 am-Noon.
Let’s just summarize by saying we’ve got a LOOOOOOOOONG way to go before the aurwaves are restored to sanity.
BTW, it’s hard to understand the rationale of a programmer who places Beck on the air during morning drive. His radio schtick is a toxic brew of anger, agitation and depression. Even if you’re a wingnut, it’s hard to imagine a wide swath of listeners who would want to start their days that way.
Probably perpetrates a certain amount of road rage. I wonder if a really sharp trial lawyer could work up a class action on that?
Remember radio payola?
Do we know what kind of monetary incentive is being used to convince station managers that the 35% of unthinking Americans are the most lucrative target audience? With tens of million of dollar contracts to people like Limbaugh, the blowhards alone can payola to make it worthwhile for stations to feature themselves. And, perhaps, be reimbursed from the networks, too.
BTW: I think all thinking Americans should make a practice of speaking directly to the management of any business that uses TVs or radios in waiting rooms about the airing inappropriate stations like FOX or religious channels. Get noisy about your objection.
Is there flaw in how am/fm radio ratings are obtained? Does bullying with exaggerated rating numbers keep some radio personalities off/on air? I do a lot of radio station surfing across the country and my dial doesn’t stay on Rush at all, nada, can’t stand the guys voice.
The whole shtick is long in the tooth. The only reason a lot of folks still listen to Limbaugh is because he’s saturated rural areas. It’s the local white noise and topic of conversation at the barber shop and cafe. And then there are enough Dittoheads still around that other folks are forced to hear him at all sorts of places of business.
And the bundling of advertising is the only reason that he stays on. Few advertisers until now knew that they were sponsoring the fathead. Or his imitating grifters.
