Josh Marshall is probably correct that the CPAC folks “tempted the Gods of farce” when they decided to have a panel called “Trump The Race Card: Are You Sick And Tired Of Being Called A Racist When You Know You’re Not One?” hosted by a black guy who still blames the Democratic Party for the Confederacy and the Ku Klux Klan. The result was a balloon so inflated with Stupid that it was bound to pop.

I particularly am stuck on a comment about “respecting the Confederacy” that was made at the event. The Confederacy hasn’t existed in how long? And there are people who feel they can’t get no respect? No disrespect for Rodney Dangerfield here, but,,,talk about detached from reality…what a joke!
I only wish it was a joke. The Confederacy was institutionalized treason, and still is.
was that a question from the audience?
No, sorry. I went back and re-read it, it was in the text of the article as a question by the author.
They deserve about as much respect as the Vichy French…
ThinkProgress has more in its write-up. I was particularly struck by the white supremacist’s response to a woman (hopefully a GOTP’er herself), who tried to correct his factual error about their party’s history. He said:

I’m eagerly awaiting some follow up with her!
The very existence of this panel speaks volumes about the durability of right wing denial. Clearly, they understand that they have lost black voters completely, but look at what they attribute this to: insufficient blame of the Democratic Party for the Civil War and the racial atrocities that followed. The South itself is therefore left blameless. They can’t afford to alienate their own base.
Who do they expect to convince with this nonsense? If they really think they can win black voters with this, it’s a clear tell that still perceive black voters as being intrinsically stupid people who can be manipulated with obsolete 19th century resentments. Naturally, they are blind to the racism of this, because they have defined racism as something that other people have. If morals were money, they’d be in Chapter 13.
“Chapter 13”. That was a great line!
There is another attribution by them that I hear all the time;”They vote Democrat because they like getting welfare.” You hear its echo in Romney’s remark about “free stuff”.
Ok. So here’s a question I’ve been wondering.
On twitter, I’ve been confronted by numerous wingnuts claiming that Democrats created KKK, slavery, poverty, tried to block Civil Rights and Voting Rights Act, etc. Of course all this is bullshit.
But the one that’s intrigued me is the KKK claim. I’ve found nothing to substantiate that. I’ve seen Southern Democrats were part of foundation of KKK. But that’s it.
Here’s my thing. What is the definitive account of the creation of the KKK? I’d like to know. Because even tho I know the Dem-KKK claim is bullshit I am intrigued. I’d like to know just for my own records. And no Wikipedia doesn’t count.
