Even when David Brooks is arguing in favor of comprehensive immigration reform, he invites ridicule. However, I am confused about who is sawing off whose balls in this scenario. If Ouranos is Lincoln and Brooks is Kronos, then how can it be the “The Christopath and Teabagging Horde” wielding the saw?
It doesn’t matter, somehow it still makes sense.
Point is, no one gives a shit what David Brooks thinks, least of all the folks who just elected Mark Sanford.
Prepare for the coming shortage of Conservatives. Stock up now.
Brooks think the GOP is the party of Indian motel owners and Pakistani 7-11 owners, but he’s wrong. The GOP is the party for angry white dudes.
It’s not really about that, I think, or the fiction of Latinos being all social conservatives. Brooks is really rather angry himself, hence the heavy-footed sarcasm of the column, and it’s DeMint and the Heritage Foundation that he’s angry at. The Republican coalition since the Southern Strategy began has been based on its incompatible wings (Country Club and Yahoo) leaving each other essentially alone. The Yahoos take the lead on abortion and firearms, and the Country Club takes the lead on capital gains tax, and the other side goes along. But on immigration they cannot really even pretend to agree: the Yahoos are just plain afraid of people with brown skin and strange food and accents, and the Country Club just plain needs a supply of workers who can be cheated of their wages, i.e. illegal immigrants. From Brooks’s Tory point of view the Yahoos job is to sputter indignantly and ineffectively about “securing the border”, and allow the Tories to run the legislation. To Brooks those angry white dudes are stealing the party from the natural aristocracy!
I think it’s about both things.
I don’t disagree with your comment at all.
But Brooks has real fantasies about what the GOP is and what it should be, and he often conflates his two fantasies so that he not only characterizes the party as something it is not, but also as something that he wishes it was.
In this case, his party is the natural home for first generation entrepreneurial immigrants. Why?
Because they’re self-starters, hard working, small businessmen who don’t need government assistance and who are burdened by forms and fees.
The problem is that the party hates them and wants them to go the fuck home.
Hmm, it’s possible the White House sometimes cares, though only for the effect it has on the way their message is perceived.
I don’t think they believe Brooks has any intrinsic value, since he in fact doesn’t have any.
The bill sucks in an almost unbelievable manner. It is going to massively increase unemployment of college graduates. It is going to increase unemployment of blacks and low wage workers.
It is a total disaster from top to bottom.
