I guess the most surprising thing about the Senate passing comprehensive immigration reform is that every single Democrat voted for it. What that tells me is that the Democrats see no real downside to supporting reform even in states like Alaska, Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, West Virginia, Arkansas, and Louisiana. I admit that I didn’t think that the Democrats could craft something that they could unanimously support.
What does that mean for the House? I think it means that there is no real political advantage in opposing reform. The Democrats in the House will support a decent Conference Report without fear of repercussions.
It also means that the House Republicans may oppose reform but that they can’t seriously think that they’ll benefit from their opposition.
They can and do think they’ll benefit politically by opposing it. Because they’re delusional.
Life was simpler when the Republicans were just cynical mofos. The problem is now that the House has a bunch of members who are true believers.
I admit that I didn’t think that the Democrats could craft something that they could unanimously support.
Why not? It has a host of corporate welfare in the form of “border security.” It’s an odious bill that’s better than the status quo.
Right, Calvin. This bill addresses two completely different subjects, illegal immigration and increased immigration of wage-busting H1-B’s. Because of the extraneous second subject, I have to oppose it. On the first subject, the bill doesn’t go far enough. The path to citizenship is too steep and the border gulag fence is ridiculous. I just read that because of the sequester, BLS is stopping collection of mass layoff statistics, yet we waste money on this paranoid fence.
If you’re a Democratic Senator you can’t afford to vote against it unless you’re from a completely lily white state. I wonder if there’s a state anywhere in this country that hasn’t seen a large influx of minority immigrants.
Do you see where you went wrong?
I see what you did there.
All but one: the melancholy Speaker, clinging to a job he’s never been able to do.
I have to admit, I find it hilarious that the Senate landed this right in Orange Julius’ lap.
if it fails, it’s because of him.
I won’t appeal to his sense of decency, because he has none.
But, is he more afraid of the money men or of the crazies….
because, this is the choice.
The man is paid a lot of money to be publicly humiliated and willfully delusional. Nice work if you can get it.
