Some of us have been warning the Washington Post for years now that Richard Cohen has a problem with women and some kind of progressive brain disease. Whether the cause is prolonged substance abuse or an untreated infestation of some spirochaete bacterium or simply the early stages of Mad Cow disease, I really can’t say. All I know is that this day was inevitable.

Good lord, what an asshole! Why don’t he and George Will take retirement together in Fogeyville and stop writing such ridiculous crap? They can shit their dungarees while shaking their ear trumpets at everyone who passes by.
Good lord, what an asshole! Why don’t he, Charles Kraphammer, Marc Theissen and George Will take retirement together in Fogeyville and stop writing such ridiculous crap?
Fixed!!
But he has a great sense of humor.
He told us so.
“To the Editor:
I love Richard Cohen’s latest column. In fact, I love all of his columns. You should give him a raise.
Also, he has a great sense of humor.
Sincerely,
Richard Cohen”
If this doesn’t get him fired nothing will.
my money is on “nothing will”, but I’d be happy to be wrong.
It’s a safe bet.
he’s not going to get fired.
Jesus fucking Christ.
I was hoping you were linking to a report that Cohen finally got fired for being even more clueless, misinformed, insensitive, and arrogant than usual. Or even that he’d been picked up by cops at 3 AM wandering the streets of McLean in his underwear, confused and calling for his long-dead grandma. No, just the column itself, which makes me want to go take a shower. And then another.
The legal definition of rape is besides the point?!?!? Um, no, Richard. The legal definition of rape is broader than intercourse because there are a lot of other ways to violate the bodily integrity of another person than PiV. The fact that he can’t imagine any says even more about his tunnel misogyny than even his victim-blaming or cultural snobbery his or his inability to conceive that maybe, just maybe, the chances that a court verdict on rape is not the definitive word as to what happened in a small town where the alleged perps are local football heroes. (A factor he didn’t even mention, because why bother acknowledging much of a community rallying behind their rapists when She Had It Coming Anyway?)
And those are just the first four things that came to mind without nauseating myself by rereading his column more closely. I’m sure there’s dozens more. It’s a tough competition.
Yes, Jeff Bezos, you’re paying this man to be the chin-stroking liberal conscience of America. At least he’s got the chin-stroking down.
They shoot horses for less than this.
Quoting the current lead comment, by one burntnorton, because it’s just so delicious:
“Finally, he connects it all to a tasteless performance by a 36 year old man and 20 year old woman of the 36 year old man’s rapetastic hit. And who does he blame? The woman of course, for perpetuating misogyny. Who does he fail to mention? The man, because clearly the men are just at the mercy of women’s sexuality, which therefore must be controlled. Cause there’s no rape in modesty cultures.”
DING DING DING!!! Yes, middle-aged elite white men always seem to hold the default position with this asshole Cohen; middle-aged elite white men are the center of the universe around which both women and teen culture orbit.
Finally, it is improper for a serial sexual harasser to lecture the culture on misogny. Cohan acts like we don’t know his past.
In honor of Jeff Bezos’s imminent ownership:
CUSTOMERS WHO BOUGHT THIS ITEM ALSO BOUGHT
GEORGE WILL ON GLOBAL WARMING
MARC THIESSEN ON TORTURE
SALLY QUINN ON THE CLINTONS
Richard Cohen is still employed?

Gotta admit, feeling a little like Captain Kirk here. Set phasers to stun.
Somehow, I had the impression rape required fucking. Not a lawyer, though.
So what’s the issue, exactly?
He doesn’t like the sexuality of pop culture and writes about it like, uh, Al Gore (or his wife)?
That’s an honest expression of your appalling ignorance.
All you have to do is imagine what it is about being raped that is so disagreeable.
It is being overpowered. It is having someone do something to you against your will.
It’s a violation of your agency and a sense of helplessness and intense fear.
What particular sex act you are forced to perform or submit to is secondary to the loss of choice and control.
Then there are the after effects of stigma and humiliation and guilt, that were especially felt by the girl on Steubenville.
For the record, Virginia’s rape laws are despicable. A friend shares a story:
I sat on a court case where the defendant was charged with rape. The prosecution put up half a dozen witnesses to argue there was no consent, and it took like 4-5 hours. Then the defense made a motion to strike the charge because no witness explicitly stated that the guy’s penis entered the girl’s vagina, a requirement for rape under Virginia law. Case dismissed.
wow, pHilo.
you’re a real piece of shit.
Then you won’t mind if someone holds you down while someone else explores your ass and throat with a phallus for the sexual entertainment of the room?
Ah. Thought so.
