I watched the president’s press conference. He made it abundantly clear that he isn’t going to make any concessions whatsoever until the government is open and our bills are paid. I guess that leaves John Boehner with nothing to sell to his peeps. So, how long before he texts Nancy Smash?

I missed the first 15 minutes. But what I saw left little doubt that the ball is 100% in John Boehner’s lap. I’m sure some in the media will try to paint it as intransigence on the part of the President, but the message was pretty plain.
And now we wait.
But first a quick tanning session and a cocktail.
Maybe never. Seriously. If he never brings up a vote, he may be dethroned. But if he brings it up, he will be dethroned. It’s all about keeping the Speakership. Our best bet is for Boehner to fall off a balcony in a drunken stupor.
Cantor would be less amusing.
But maybe up for a deal.
Only if it has a poison pill for the 99%.
Yes, he is more dangerous than Boner.
John Boehner doesn’t text.
I think the unity of the House GOP will hold out for the debt ceiling fandango before the bar closes.
None of them want to be seen voting with Democrats. The discharge petition already exposed that.
I’m tending to lean this way, too.
I don’t think anything happens until there has been significant economic damage. Enough to insure that it is impossible for us to recover until well after the end of the President’s second term.
It will be simply to destroy the entirety of the Obama presidency.
Do these fuckers WANT Obama to rule by decree (and bring about what they most fear)? If this thing goes down, he could do it if he was so inclined.
No. They want him GONE. In whatever way it takes, in whatever fashion is necessary. Collateral damage is irrelevant.
This is what we are dealing with.
Read it, if you haven’t already. These are the people I know. These are the people who want this. It is beyond human comprehension.
I wish the NSA would be turned on Republicans. I’m sick to death of 80 years of government infiltration and sabotage of liberal groups.
Mike, I read the article; thanks for the link.
The GOP wants Obama gone, but in a confrontation between the legislative and the executive, I’d put my money on the executive. It’s very dangerous — for the GOP as well as for our system of government — to put the President in a position where the only way he can do the right thing is to break the law. The American people will side with the man who saved the country from financial disaster, regardless of how he did it. Then it won’t matter one whit whether the House was acting within the bounds of Constitution, IMO. You can be a destructive weasel without breaking the law (as many Wall Street tycoons have demonstrated).
Coups can happen when a corrupt government forfeits its legitimacy in the eyes of the people. I think the GOP House leadership will do just that if they refuse to raise the debt limit.
I think the long term plan that they hatched involved tanking the credit rating. It’s a gambit where Entitlements die as the cost of borrowing goes up. To them it’s a win. Everyone will say fund defense and other R priorities.
Social Security Trust Fund is a creditor. And seniors are not going to let the Congress forget that they, the seniors, earned those benefits through working and having taxes deducted from their paychecks. Even in very Republican districts, seniors will be fierce about Social Security.
It is the entitlements that are in the general fund that they will try to kill–Medicare, Medicaid, veterans benefits, …
But the ones they always harp on — “welfare”, Food Stamps, legal aid, and so on — they’ve already killed over the past 30 years and in the current shutdown.
He’s been drunk dialing Nancy Smash for weeks..
I’m certain of this.
I really hope you’re right.
I did too. An hour long, and no mention of the public option.
You won’t catch me voting for him again.
Thanks. I needed that!!
Still playing games, they are.
Fantastic. One down, now, get rid of chained CPI and I can start hating the GOP more than Obama again.
[To clarify, I will start hating the GOP more than I hate Obama. (I might even start liking the guy again). But to claim that I hate the GOP more than Obama hates them right about now would be a tall order.]
[On the other hand, maybe he loves them since they’re all but dousing themselves in kerosene and lighting the match]
What does the appointment of Yellen actually get us?
Besides a largely symbolic victory in the war for gender equity?
After all, we’re replacing the retiring Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve Bank with the sitting Vice Chairman of the Boars of Governors of the Federal Reserve Bank. It’s not like Richard Trumka got the job.
Is she going to call on us to expropriate the expropriators? Is she going to begin the process of seizing the commanding heights of the economy in the name of the workers?
Bernanke hasn’t been half bad. Much better than Greenspan who was just a tool of GS.
Continuing Bernanke’s program is better than some austerity freak like Larry Summers.
