I had fun writing for the Washington Monthly this weekend. It’s cool to have a new and different audience. My next weekend gig there is scheduled for November 23rd and 24th.
One of our two cars was pronounced dead last week, so this morning I am basically a chauffeur. So far, I’ve delivered CabinGirl to work and CabinBoytheYoungest to pre-school. Now, I have to get CabinBoytheEldest to work. Then I’ll have to begin reversing the process.
In between, I’ll try to find some time to shop for a new car and get a few fresh threads up.
What are you looking forward to this week?
Grants all week; looking for new work; beginning to shop for a new used car (and a loan with which to purchase it); running on Wednesday and Thursday; seeing music tonight; band practice after running on Wednesday; figuring out my next trip to O Canada. I’m probably missing something…
I’m looking forward to all our local Democrats winning their elections! I live in a vote-by-mail state so it could be Thursday before we know. Meanwhile, breaking down a campaign office, then wrangling campaign managers, candidates and field organizers for exit interviews. Seriously, everyone should have the chance to be part of a well-funded grassroots campaign. It’s really fun.
are you running? I guess I should know this but have been offline most of the past 2 months
Not running…helping to operate the field operation.
I’m looking forward to some rich person dangling a large charitable contribution out there for the winner of a Rachel Maddow-Rand Paul shooting contest.
no, no – is’s a duel
He’s not allowed to duel because Kentucky. This would be the next-best thing.
VW TDI engines get great mileage and last a long time. My friend has a 1999 Beetle that gets 50+ mpg and has over 300k miles. I have a 2006 Jetta that gets 45 mpg and is easily the best car I’ve ever owned. Mine starts easily at -20F. Oh, and driving a diesel is just more pleasant. They climb hills with ease and don’t need to shift as often. Just my two cents.
Based on current issues in Congress, what could provoke the coup in the House might be gay rights instead of immigrant rights.
There are now two issues barreling down the track to the House – the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and the refusal of 9 Southern state National Guard adjutants to obey the orders of the Secretary of Defense (and the President) to provide spousal benefits to same-sex National Guard spouses.
The National Guard issue could provoke the Supreme Court to assert equal protection of the law judgements over state constitutions, which would in effect void all of the “protection-of-marriage” referendum issues that states have passed in the last two decades. But it is likely there are some Republicans who would want to avoid that fight and deal with the issue with legislation in hopes that states back down when it proves a political loser nationally.
Gonna get interesting in Congress between now and the first primaries of 2014.
Young brothers explain Bayes’s theorem
Cory Doctorow has written a 1984-like young adult sci-fi novel called Little Brother.
These two brothers explore one of the ideas in the novel: Bayes Rule. Or why exactly the NSA’s “bigger haystack” strategy for identifying terrorists is stupid. And points either to incompetence or a rogue agenda.

(or both).
