It’s not just immigration reform that John Boehner is refusing to introduce, he’s also saying ‘no’ to a vote on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). He says it’s not needed. Apparently, gays and lesbians are already protected from discrimination in the workplace even though it’s legal to fire them for their sexual orientation in 29 states. Hell, you can fire people for being transgender in 33 states. But, I guess, getting fired isn’t discrimination. Discrimination must be, what? Not getting a good parking space? Having to pay for everyone’s coffee?
What exactly is discrimination in John Boehner’s world?
Oh, right. He’s lying. He just doesn’t give a shit.
In Kentucky (and I believe a few other states as well) you can be fired for no reason whatsoever – they don’t have to give a reason. I believe that fact would make the measure moot unless it overrules the state law(s) and forces employers to give a valid reason for termination. That, I would welcome.
Illinois too.
Every state but Montana.
Not exactly. Those types of laws may make it harder, but we wouldn’t dream of repealing laws that protect people from racial discrimination, for example, just because they don’t always work.
Discrimination is usually proven by patterns rather than some explicit confession by the bigot anyway.
You are right. Virginia too It’s ironically called a right to work state
Right to be Fired State.
Right To Work For Less.

Gee…I wonder why…
Where are those Republicans who are going cross over in the House and make that bipartisan majority that gets things like this and immigration and a budget done?
Are we heading for a Christmastime budget crisis by Congressional inaction?
Also, delighted that Obama yanked the soapbox out from under Mary Landrieu and Kay Hagan by dealing with insurance cancellations with an administrative change. It had the added benefit of smoking Karen Ignagni and AHIP out of the woodwork.
While lots of worker bees are frantically trying to make Obamacare work, I think we can make their job a lot easier by putting single-payer back on the table politically as the alternative to Obamacare. Are the stakeholder going to start having good behavior or are they going to hasten the end of private health insurance as the solution for most people? Right now, it looks like the stakeholders are up to their old tricks.
Of course they’re up to their old tricks. It’s the only business model they know.
Which, in and of itself (setting aside cost savings, better health outcomes, etc.) is a compelling reason to implement single payer.
And – I speak as someone who’s had life-threatening health issues for over two decades now – I consider single payer a compromise to my ideal outcome, which also includes outlawing private health insurance and putting their top execs on trial for crimes against humanity. I’ve had a succession of such companies clearly and intentionally try to kill me, and I use that term very precisely. It’s cheaper for them if I die than if I remain alive. Their business model is predicated on contempt for human life. With sick people, it’s bad for business.
I am very glad that the tally is Geov Parrish 1, insurance companies 0.
Thanks. It’s actually about 6-0, but the trick is keeping the shutout going. They only need to score one to win!
As for Boehner, he sees discrimination as a good thing. One shouldn’t be drinking just any bottle of scotch.
oh l know….thanks
Kaos
I would like to chime in with the obvious if unpleasant fact, that as much as we dislike the Blue Dogs if we had a few more of them in the House then Boehner would not be holding the gavel as Speaker and the idiotic Hastert Rule would be rendered moot.
