We had our second Thanksgiving tonight. This one was at home. Then we laughed at the University of Alabama Crimson Tide. That more than made up for the pain of Michigan’s loss to Ohio State. Ha ha ha.

That said, OSU should fire Fickle…their D has been suspect all year, and when a horrible, pathetic team like Blue can hang 600 yards on ya, you really don’t deserve a job.
The ‘Bama game, however, was one for the ages. I still can’t figure out, however, how you can be the best team in the country and not be able to a recruit a kicker that isn’t a head case.
One of my daughters married an Alabama guy and his family are big ‘Bama fans. My other daughter and her New York husband are visiting in Alabama for Thanksgiving. Bet they are doing grief counseling. And then there are my SC buddies who are Clemson fans and my UNC fan neighbors. And my Michigan graduate nephew.
Lots of interesting conversations coming up this week.
Despite my admiration for your writing Booman, I don’t visit often enough to know (and without meaning to pry); why is it that a Michigan loss causes you pain?
[I did my residency at UM but the only part of Big Blue that caught my attention was learning the stadium’s capacity was just large enough to hold my hometown’s population]
My great grandfather and grandfather went to Ann Arbor. My mom grew up in K-Zoo, where I went to college, and one of my brothers went to NMU. My gramps was still watching games religiously when he was 98 years old. Coming from Jersey, we didn’t really have a team, so we all kind of adopted teams. Like many others, I followed Penn State. But they weren’t yet in the Big Ten and they didn’t play too many big name teams. I think I remember three separate undefeated seasons for PSU without even a share of the championship. So, my first love in college football was U of M, and then secondarily UCLA, because my other grandfather was a professor there.

From 1983-1989, I taught at OSU, so do have a residual affection for them. It is amazing to me that I first arrived in Columbus 30 years ago.

I have watched many college and pro games and seen many amazing things, but the 100+ yd runback to win the game, crush Alabama and send those turds into the outer darkness of the failed three-peat is both extremely amusing, extremely amazing, and ultimately very satisfying.
My holiday started out obnoxious, became awesome, and ended spectacularly.
Obnoxious: my dad did his whole “Steve Skwire Ruins the Holidays” game, also known as “Heads You Lose/Tails I win” with me as the intended pawn.
Awesome: He lost the game, badly. He lost SO badly he may have lost two other ongoing games as well.
Spectacular: As you know, the governor of PA is determined to destroy our schools. A local publican, Fergus Carey heretofore to be known as St. Fergie, organized pretty much every high-profile band in town to do a tribute to the Band’s “Last Waltz” at the Trocadero Theatre, as a fundraiser. Also in the band, Garth Hudson and someone from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It was inspiring. As much as I complain about Philly, last night was everything I love about this city.
I was torn in two. It was like I had two pieces of my soul twisted around a central theme, my tortured cries to an uncaring, sneering Universe: Why can’t they BOTH LOSE????
I’m STILL laughing about that ending. How about when the color guy goes ‘Alabama didn’t have any athletes on the field, only fat guys’ MAHAHAHAHA!
Props to Michigan for going for it. I wish it had worked out for them.
.
My enthusiastic agreement with both of these viewpoints, nailbar.
I got food poisoning. Today is the first day my stomach isn’t on fire.
Fuck thanksgiving.
Wow. Really a bummer. Never had that happen, although we have made all the mistakes in food handling you possibly can.
Finally better (Sunday relapse, probably took it too fast).
Second time it’s happened to me. First time was on my 11th birthday and I threw up half a dozen times that night.
F Michigan.
