John McCain can’t catch a break. Even after he went on a local radio station and said that the president is far worse than Jimmy Carter in his foreign policy, he wound up getting rebuked by the Arizona Republican Party:
Delivering a strong rebuke to U.S. Sen. John McCain, Arizona Republicans passed a resolution to censure the one-time presidential nominee for what they characterize as a liberal record that has been “disastrous and harmful” to the state and nation.
While McCain is a political star on the national stage, for years he has had to contend with vocal critics in his home state, who accuse him of betraying the Grand Old Party’s principles.
Saturday’s censure came two weeks after the Maricopa County Republican Party passed a resolution to censure the senator on a 1,150-to-351 vote.
The state GOP party’s censure passed by acclamation, meaning by a voice vote. It has no practical effect, but serves as an attempt to embarrass the senator.
McCain and his office have not commented on the county censure although his supporters point to the party’s reputation for ultra-right partisanship. The senator’s office on Saturday declined comment on the state censure. McCain is considering seeking a sixth Senate term in 2016.
Former three-term U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., dismissed the anti-McCain resolution as “wacky.”
They’re mad that McCain supports immigration reform and didn’t support the government shutdown. I guess they don’t give him points for advocating war in every situation in every country on Earth.
In any case, John McCain is apparently insufficiently bloodthirsty and partisan to remain a Republican in good standing in his home state.
The press is going to need more time on the tire swing.
It used to be that if you were a strong defender of American exceptionalism and thought that the application of American military might was always a good thing, because our intentions were always pure and just, then you could easily get your Republican dance card stamped.
But now, you have to be so much more in order to be in the club. You have to be a defender of the fallacious “Christian nation” philosophy. You absolutely must believe that god proscribed that the white male must be the superior and dominant part of the species. You have to believe that women are inherently inferior and must be directed and controlled by the hand of a man. You have to believe that any dark skinned person is a threat to the nation’s health and security. You have to believe that anyone who does not succeed in their life is simply a lazy moocher who wants everything handed to them. You have to believe that the wealthy have attained their status because they are better human beings. You have to believe that there is absolutely no role for government beyond fighting wars and protecting the elites. You have to believe that, above all else, an individual has the pre-eminent right to own any firearm that is manufactured. You have to believe that it is the right and duty of any individual to use their own personal discretion to decide when an armed rebellion is necessary in their own personal circumstances.
The list can go on and on and on. But you can see the pattern here. There is no refuge in the Republican Party for anyone who held a view which was acceptable in the political mainstream prior to 2008. The basic tenet of George Bush’s “you’re either with us or against us” philosophy has morphed into a Frankenstein monster that is rapidly consuming the entirety of the GOP. How ironic that this is happening to McCain, who is largely viewed as the one who added the final ingredient to the recipe that gave us this insanity. John McCain is simply the latest one in the cross-hairs. But he will certainly not be the last.
Welcome to the Wingnut State of Teabagizona.
You think it’s funny watching it form the outside, try living here some time…I have Kochsucker commercial on my teevee every 35 seconds warning me that Obamacare is gonna bankrupt me and that insidious liberal (blue dog, first and second vote in Congress was with his republican comrades) Ron Barber is gonna destroy ‘Murrica with his health care and evil grainy muted colors, or something…
No offense, but a lot of the west should just be given back to Mexico, starting with Texas.
In fact, Texas should be the first state given back to Mexico, and I want 100,000 TV cameras there to watch shitheel Texans self-destruct and/or go Second AmendmentTM on each other.
Talk about reality TV.
ummmmm….shitheel is the wrong term. There are actually only two types of boots used in Texas:
ShitKickers: square-toed
RoachStompers: pointy-toed
Thank you for this opportunity to clear up this mis-understanding.
It’s not that McCain is not RW enough. These are the guys who 30 years ago were desperately attempting to be elected sheriff, school board, county treasurer and so forth. They now have the example of McDonnell(DE), Mourcock(IN), Akins(MO) and so forth.
The first step in getting elected to high public office IS TO WIN THE PRIMARY. EVERYTHING is secondary to that.
These assholes are not concerned about issues, country, or anything. Just about THEM getting elected. In order to get McCain out of the business, you have to prove your bona fides.
In academia, its called “proving your existence”. And it is just as fatuous.
Which is why Progressive Dems need to attach themselves to HRC’s coattails if she is the nominee.
Run for town dogcatcher, librarian, school board, and any other “small-time” office.
This is how we get control over red and blue states, and not just 2/3 branches of Federal government.
