   Now excuse me while I rant. The way Jews are presented in the US media, which of course claims to be “pro-Israel,” which of course means “pro Likud-Moledet,” you would never imagine that such a person as the South African guy in your book could possibly exist. When is the last time Fox or CNN stuck Yuri Avnery’s head in a panel box? I think I have seen him once in 4 years. Even Michael Lerner. Maybe seen him twice, and at least once he was just there to talk about theology. No, just Pinkas and Gissim and Bibi the Snugglebun. OK, I will not start. Here are some links.

   Expanding on my comment elsewhere, Neturei Karta showed up at both the London and Toronto rallies yesterday.  I had never heard of them before yesterday.  I find it interesting that they basically consider the Zionists to be arrogant dickheads.

   Meanwhile Netanyahu openly declares that the occupation is to be permanent, per Michael Omar-Man:

   “I think the Israeli people understand now what I always say: that there cannot be a situation, under any agreement, in which we relinquish security control of the territory west of the River Jordan,” Netanyahu said in a televised statement about the current Gaza military operation, the Times of Israel reported.

   Yes. You read that right. Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister for the coming years (unless he is unseated by a political opponent who outflanks him from the right) said that there is no way he would ever pull the Israeli army out of the West Bank.

   It’s official. Not that this should really surprise anyone, as long as Netanyahu is the Israeli prime minister the occupation is forever and there will be no sovereign Palestine.

   Every word of his offeriong grudging support for the peace process has been a lie.

   Meh, I don’t prefer to be allies with religious nutjobs. Jews can be antisemitic all the same. Not saying these fellows are antisemitic (though they do keep company with many rabid antisemites), but they’re far-right religious kooks who have their own religious reasons for opposing the occupation, and it doesn’t have much to do with the plight of Palestine so much as it’s about their religious prophesy.

     Sure.  They basically think Netanyahu and the rest of his buds are arrogant, presumptuous assholes.  it had to be awfully weird for the protestors in London though.  How many of them, before yesterday, knew who Neturei Karta existed?

     I wouldn’t prefer the Shas religious group inciting hatred and violence against Arabs and part of the Israeli cabinet and establishment to remove Palestinians from Judea and Samaria [West Bank].

     Further, while Neturey Karta are an odd anomalous movement within Israeli society whose ideas are clearly in the minority, they are not violent.  I’ve never heard of a single incident in which they’ve attacked or harmed an Israeli.  Since they don’t serve in the IDF, nor generally have professions, it’s hard to see how Bergel could’ve harmed a flea.  Further, Haredi Jews generally have a very low level of secular education.

   These men, too, are my brothers.  Although it is getting more difficult than ever to think of them that way. Most people know the issues I have with Satmar. There are many. But for purposes of this essay I will focus on their strident opposition to the existence of the State of Israel.

   As I have said many times, they have every right to believe as they do, and state their case loudly and clearly. It is a view based on the now deceased Satmar Rebbe, R’ Yoel Teitelbaum. The  3 oaths mentioned in the Gemarah (Kesuvos 111a) prevent the Jewish people from any right to rule in the land of Israel. So under any condition, even if the state was ruled entirely by a Charedi government, they would still be opposed to it.

   Yesterday they did it again. They called for a rally in Manhattan. This was a rare moment of unity between the feuding brothers Teitelbaum – each claiming to be the heir to the Satmar throne. They called out their `troops’ in this cause. The result was a massive rally as can be seen in the photos at VIN. I’m sure they would call this a tremendous success and Kiddush HaShem.

   Their stated purpose for this protest was their opposition to the Israeli draft of Charedim. In this they have the support of many Charedi rabbinic leaders. But their underlying antipathy for the State should not be over-looked. I believe this was true motivation for this rally. Here was yet another opportunity to bash Israel.  I’m sure they relished the moment.

   The Centrist RCA condemned the rally. No surprise there. But many Charedi rabbinic leaders opposed that rally too, starting with R’ Aharon Leib Steinman. R’ Chaim Kanievsky added his name to R’ Steinman’s. And in America so too did Rav Shmuel Kamenetsky.

   Back to Satmar. I do not see how a protest like this benefits Klal Yisroel in any way no matter how one feels about drafting Charedim. How is a public demonstration in Manhattan going to impact in any way on the government in Israel’s decision to equalize the draft? Especially if the protest was made by people who believe in dismantling the State?

   Remembering The Satmar Rebbe ZTL

   Satmar Rebbe: We grabbed Eretz Yisroel prematurely that prevented the redemption

   He continued to state that he stands and anticipates Heaven’s abundant mercy, to merit to continue serving Hashem further in joy and in good health until we quickly see the redemption of all of Israel and their rejoicing.

   The words reflect the inner feelings of the Satmar Rebbe, Rav Yoel Teitelbaum zt”l.  He did not forget the Nazis yimach sh’mam v’zichram, and what they did to him, his family, and to the nation of Israel.

   With some exception, most of the Gedolei Yisroel and of Klal Yisroel for that matter did not share what they viewed as his more extreme position against Zionism.  But no one will deny the depth of emotion and love that he expressed when he discussed it.

   He explained that there is no doubt that after the unparalleled suffering of Israel during the holocaust, there was so much pain, agony and suffering of Hashem’s children that the gates of Divine compassion were wide open and Hashem would have brought the Messiah – immediately.  It is only the fact that we grabbed Eretz Yisroel prematurely that prevented the redemption.
