I have been a huge Monty Python fan since the 70’s. And as hilarious as I have always thought that scene was, once I actually started paying attention to U.S. politics, I find that it really does speak volumes.
In the French Revolution (225 years ago), this was the period of Thermidore (both the month and the temperature), in which the Committee of Public Safety increased, gradually, the offenses which would lead to the Place de la Concorde and Mssr le Gullotine, and finally the members of the central committee were themselves denounced, Robespierre among them.

These ISIS guys are dangerous and genuinely evil. Don’t treat him with contempt. He is not owed any respect, but like a snake or a scorpion or a brown recluse spider, you want to know where he is and avoid him.
Just how large is his army? Just how capable of government are his followers? Governing 1.0 billion people is not a easy task to take on. Both China and India are evidence of that.
Watching for ISIS to get overextended in its blitzkrieg of Iraqi cities. Or for Baghdadi’s claims to cause some of his tribal allies to eventually drop their alliances (which are what has eased the way for the takeover of cities).
Wake me up when Iran and Egypt take this man’s claims seriously enough to step aside.
There are no doubt a long line of claimants-but current and in the past, and none of them have gained traction even in the popular imagination. And by the way, who would be the people who would certify that this claimant is legitmate?

Sadly, very true…
Leader of ALL of the Muslims?
Wait until the other Muslim sects and their leaders hear about this!
How do you say “toast” in the various Middle Eastern languages and dialects?
No true Muslim would dare oppose him!
It’s easy to spot the not-true Muslims. They’re the ones who aren’t following him.
Sometimes it works. Rarely and not recently, but it’s not unprecedented.
Nothing new under the sun. In Islam, the concept is called Takfiri.

The documentary “The Power of Nightmares” discusses an Algerian Takfiri leader.
Ultimately, purity movements end up purging almost everyone besides the leaders themselves and turning off the population at large at the same time.
We’re seeing it with the TeaPartyTM here in the state…the US analog to Fundamentalist Muslims.
Hence the existence of the Democratic Socialists of America and the Social Democrats, USA.
People’s Front of Judea v. Judean People’s Front
Redux.
“What happened to the Popular Front?”
“He’s over there.”
