Hospital’s closure may have claimed a life
Belhaven, North Carolina Mayor Adam O’Neal warned that citizens would die unnecessarily if Vidant Pungo Hospital closed its doors. Unfortunately, he may have been proven right.
Why Did Black Voters Flee The Republican Party In The 1960s?

If you’d walked into a gathering of older black folks 100 years ago, you’d have found that most of them would have been Republican.
Wait… what?
Yep. Republican. Party of Lincoln. Party of the Emancipation. Party that pushed not only black votes but black politicians during that post-bellum period known as Reconstruction.
Today, it’s almost the exact opposite. That migration of black voters away from the GOP reached its last phase 50 years ago this week.
Walking through the Farmer’s Market at 18th Street and La Cienega Boulevard in Los Angeles, a mixture of Angelenos strolled the asphalt parking lot, surveying rows of leafy produce and ripe stone fruit. Virtually all the people I approached who were registered voters were registered to one party.
“I’m affiliated with the Democratic party, of course!” laughs Arthur Little, a thin man in shorts and electric turquoise-framed sun glasses.
“Why ‘of course’?” I asked.
“Because I think of it as the party that is at least officially interested in putting people’s rights before corporate rights,” Little shakes his head. “I don’t even know why a black person even would be a Republican,” he muses, as he walks off with his teenaged son.
“…encrusted lollipop residue and coating of powdered sugar?”
What?
You’re leaving the kid in the car during the detailing?
Careful…that’s a felony now.
But seriously, folks…
I once left my faithful Welsh Corgi in my car, parked in the shade…it was about 60 degrees out and cloudy, in Back Bay, Boston…with plenty of water and cracked windows. We had been traveling for several days, and the back seat was his doghouse as far as he was concerned. I checked back every 15 minutes or so just to be sure. He was fine. The third time I came back there was a fire engine, a bunch of firefighters and a couple of cops just getting ready to break into the car. I said “Where’s the fire, gentlemen?” and they got all huffy. The dog was ready to play. He was always ready to play, to be truthful. It took me another 15 minutes to prove to them that I wasn’t a serial dog molester. This is about 12 years ago…just as the nanny state started its precipitous climb. Today? In Boston after the Marathon bombing? I’d still be in jail.
Now we are all considered guilty until either proven innocent or so wealthy that guilt or innocence have no bearing on the subject. Thank you, security state enablers. Thank you so much!!!
I hope someone FrontPages this.
From Larry O last night.

Pleased about AFTs rejection of Common Core and Arne Duncan.
Wait, what?!?
“…encrusted lollipop residue and coating of powdered sugar”—that’s a feature, not a bug.
Is anyone coming to Detroit for Netroots Nation this weekend?
24 last night:
I enjoyed it. It was sad. Jack isn’t supposed to be happy. It was never going to have a ‘ Hollywood’ ending.
I want more 24, but if this was the end, I’m ok with it.
More days of f*cking storms through Thursday!
Looks like our nation’s NSA outrages may bring the good old-fashioned typewriter back into vogue in Germany.
