Paul Waldman at the Washington Post:
Boehner and other Republican leaders are now trying to walk an impossible tightrope. On one hand, they’re arguing that they have no interest in impeaching the president — they know that it would be a political catastrophe if they did — and any suggestion to the contrary is nothing but Democratic calumny. On the other hand, they’re arguing that Obama is a lawless tyrant who is trampling on the Constitution. If that contradiction has put them in a difficult situation, they have no one to blame but themselves.
Let’s not parse this. The party has gone crazy and no one has a prescription that will mitigate the damage.
The party has gone crazy and no one has a prescription that will mitigate the damage.
There is one thing, but that group abdicated their responsibilities ages ago, if they ever took their responsibilities seriously at all.
What is “the media”, Alex?
Bingo!!!
This is also the same group of people who accuse the President of being worse then Hitler, and then say he is like Neville Chamberlain. It makes no sense.
Of course not! Did you ever have a one-on-one face-to-face extended conversation with a Tea Bagger? Not a shouting match, but a quiet non-judgmental conversation in which you appear as a potential recruit looking for information? It’s the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party and the Red Queen is indeed off her head. So sad that so many voters not only can;t engage in critical thinking but have no concept of formal logic.
Yes, I’ve had a conversation with a teabillie. They really are screwed up to the point where Ted Cruz resonates with them. The future will not be kind to them. I feel bad for their kids.
I feel bad that they have kids.
He’s also both wimp and Chicago-land thug. He’s an effete intellectual and a Machiavellian monster. He’s completely ineffectual as a leader and a closet Muslim socialist traitor selling our interests down the drain in the most cunning and clever ways. Quite an amazing man, this Obama.
He’s also an out-of-touch egghead, and incapable of connected public utterance without a TeleprompterTM.
One of my favorites is that he’s not a real American and also he’s too obsessed with the NCAA basketball tournament.
The caricature that the GOP have developed of who they think is Pres. Obama is so far removed from reality that it truly is some type of psychological disorder.
Clint Eastwood’s “performance” at the Republican Convention was a revelation into how delusional the GOP truly is – there was nothing but an empty chair, but they all imagined their version of the president.
Also, the GOP seems to have some type of little brother syndrome where they co-opt many of complaints (and some slogans) we had of W. It’s as if after 8 years of our complaints, they have to somehow make it seem that our guy is 100x’s worse.
But whereas our complaints were largely justified, theirs are just sad.
On even days: Neville Chamberlin!
On odd days: (Worse than) Hitler!
It makes perfect sense once you understand that the typical conservative is an authoritarian who dittos well what their authority figure tells them. To top it all off, they then project their own noxious morals and values onto liberals.
He’s secretly a devoted Muslim extremist who wants to implement Sharia Law AND at the same time a Godless Atheist. That fact that he did this while listening to 20 years of Christian sermons from black extremist Jeremiah Wright just shows how fiendish he is (even if he is too stupid to put a sentence together without a teleprompter).
We need SNL to update their sketch from the 1970s about “it’s both a floor shine AND a desert topping”.
Tightrope? They have walked themselves into a corner as far as immigration and voting is concerned. Immigrants are watching the teabaggers hate on the children walking through the desert to get here. Every time McDaniel talks about his failed senate run….they hear how the teabaggers believe Afro Americans have no right to vote in Mississippi.
Yes, they speak of voter fraud as if getting votes from black people is itself fraudulent.
2/5ths fraudulent.
The point of the tightrope is to get them past the next election. There’s no long term game plan.
That seems to be the current policy of just about everyone, everywhere.
Except China.
.
In their case, that’s lack of opportunity, not virtue.
China is fucked, too. Not immediately, but certainly after a generation or so. Most obviously they have no workable plan to counteract the gender-imbalanced demographic time bomb just waiting to go off. Even if the population was willing to throw open the doors to hundreds of millions of foreign women settling in the country, that’s going to inflame already smoldering racial tensions.
A lady I work with came back from Shanghai last month after visiting her mom (92! fell and broke her hip). She came back with a terrible cough and looked bad. She said many people were coughing in Shanghai. She saw a lung doctor here who said she had no infection just very bad irritation and prescribed corticosteriod asthma medicine. She’s OK now, but said she was afraid she would stop breathing on the plane.
Just a little anecdote that confirms media reports of widespread air pollution in China’s cities.
Mail order brides — they should be rich enough by then to buy enough of the shortfall in their production.
Well, I suppose they could attempt a Full Limbaugh and claim that they would impeach him if he wasn’t a blah.
Yes, it’s all so terribly terribly unfair that they can’t impeach him. Waaa!
But the base still loves it.
The ever-shrinking, ever-aging base.
The Republican leadership threw plenty of red meat to what they thought was their pet troop of tea-baboons just because they pissed off liberals. Now the troop has turned on them. I’m having my schadenfreude covered with chopped walnuts and chocolate syrup.
The GOP should be declared a Domestic Terrorist organization, disbanded and treated like all other Terrorist or they will completely destroy the USA.
Take a look at the numerous amounts of damage to this country they have caused already. Then ask yourself how much more can it actually take? As you pull in to buy new tires and shocks from the damaged the highways of holes across the nation have caused. It is not even safe to go across bridges for they are over stressed from metal fatigue.
All possible under the Patriot Act II. I certainly would have used it. I’d love to see Boner and company in cells at Gitmo.
And apparently the ‘Blame it on the Democrats’ meme hasn’t yet reached Grampa Walnuts, who today proclaimed that Obama is the “..most lawless president ever!!!11!!Eleventy!”
Lawsuit: “Happy Birthday” is not in copyright, and Warner owes the world hundreds of millions for improperly collected royalties.
Perhaps this little theft by a US corporation will soon stop.
Amazing! Who owns the letter “A”? How about the number “1”? With a copyright on the alphabet one could claim royalties on every book ever written in the USA or UK?
How about a patent on the concept of an alphabet? That’s legal under software patent law.
“Monetize everything” — the vision of high finance guys.
I’m normally opposed to the idea, but I would be willing to prescribe euthanasia to put them out of their misery.
Just tell them that Obamacare forbids suicide.
Here is a sad result. All those free super-PAC sponsored books are taking up more and more shelf space in local libraries across the US. DeToqueville’s Democracy in America is removed because of lack of circulation–to be replaced in small libraries across America with De Souza’s America, which is popular because of Fox News promotion. Glenn Beck’s many books are now outpacing Ann Coulter’s many books on library bookshelves and classic solid political and historical works from the past century are disappearing in book sales.
Because the political war of the conservatives is total and the information war must be total so that there can be total victory for the future conservative majority in America.
And this corruption of our collective memory by elimination of many primary sources and books that scrupulously use primary sources will have far-reaching political effects into the future.
Librarians, beset with business-oriented boards and tight budgets, have little power to fight this in small counties–even as the science section gets smaller and smaller and the “religious fiction” section balloons.
Glen Beck and Ann Coulter books, what a waste of trees! There would have been more intellectual content if they had been processed into toilet paper.
Which is why someone is providing to libraries for free or at reduced cost. And driving the circulation statistics on Fox keeps them on the shelves. No matter how many times folks like us reshelve them in the Fiction section.
These people would burn down the Library of Congress, wouldn’t they? It would actually be in their interest if the original copies of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were lost, because then they could rewrite them as they please. Put the 2nd Amendment at the very beginning of the Constitution as God intended, and so forth.
