I think my father was a little afraid of what my mother would think or say or do if he expressed the opinion that some other woman was attractive, so he basically never expressed any opinions about the attractiveness of women. The one exception was Lauren Bacall. When it came to her, he just didn’t care about expressing his massive crush. Frankly, I think he made a good choice for his exception. Lauren Bacall was all that and a bag of chips.

A lovely, classy woman. I think I’ll watch “The Big Sleep” again.
“Lauren Bacall was all that and a bag of chips.”
Are you and Booman saying you wouldn’t throw her out of bed for Eating Potato Chips??
Your father was not alone. I was a teenager, and it was probably at least forty years ago when I first noticed her in a movie on television. I was smitten then, and it has carried through to this day. Her class, beauty, wit and charm were just irresistible. She was, indeed, “all that and a bag of chips”.
What a haunting bio! What does it say about our society that this beautiful intelligent talented woman had to struggle for half a century to be other than her husband’s lover and widow? What does it say about me that I listed “beautiful” first when the other two attributes are much more important?
In her own words:
When I was a tyke we used to sail over to Catalina in our little 25′ sailboat. Several times Bogey & Bacall would share the same cove for the weekend. They were boisterous, silly and above all, friendly. Great memories of beach bonfires under dark skies, hot dogs and Bacall’s sultry laugh. She was a great broad!
Wow. What a great story!
Santana had a storied history and I love his last quote about why he loved to sail her stag.
Bacall 2005 on Larry King show:
Bacall, James Garner, and Robin Williams were all real liberals. Didn’t shy away from the tests of their times. Stood up for what’s right as Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz have done today.
Voter: Oh, Mr. Stevenson, you have the support of all the intelligent people.
AS: Ah, but I need a majority.
The Mother Goddess of us all
A wonderful actor to be sure. The epitome of cool, with the undercurrent of zany craziness. Much of her persona seems to be a presage to David Lynch.
She will be greatly missed. I need to go back and watch some of her old films again.
