Another shoe drops as the Washington Post editorial board announces that it will no longer use the term “Redskins” to describe the local professional football team.
We don’t believe that fans who are attached to the name have racist feeling or intent, any more than does [team owner] Mr. [Daniel] Snyder. But the fact remains: The word is insulting. You would not dream of calling anyone a “redskin” to his or her face. You wouldn’t let your son or daughter use it about a person, even within the privacy of your home.
The franchise needs to give up the nickname, but I’m not sure that refusing to acknowledge the name of the team is sensible.
I think they should just borrow The Onion’s language in reporting on this.
that was bold.
Washington Rootless Cosmopolitans
Wow, they went there!
Randy Newman’s Rednecks for satirical punch.
Mike Carey is the man.
Exactly. You wouldn’t say it to someone’s face. WaPo’s decision is okay by me.
it’s only going to change when people convince either Snyder or the NFL that the name is bad for business. Will this influence them? Maybe.
it’s been painfully clear that for a huge majority of sports fans the native mascots are fine, and for them this will be written off as “political correctness”.
I do my best not to advocate violence, but this guy needs his assets kicked from Ferguson to Florida.
not to defend Zimmerman, but that source isn’t serious.
Oops, I got Onioned…
Would you have said that about apartheid divestiture?
Shaming is a powerful tool. I’m inclined to think this is how progress always happens.
Is that how the “team whose name cannot be said” works? How will the WaPo style guide be updated?
It won’t matter. Newspapers are irrelevant anymore.
