In those days there was hope. Little did we know what was soon to come. I was just finishing up an overseas active duty tour and caught them in concert in Norfolk, VA.
Thanks for the song to transport us back in time. The hairstyles were right out of the pages of my older sister’s yearbook. I don’t recall ever seeing a video of that song – what an expressive face. His eyes sparkled and I loved when he broke out into that great smile.
The world seemed simpler then, though surely not for the people who were just a bit older and were soon worried about Vietnam. I do recall the day of the draft lottery. My sister’s boyfriend got number 366, that was surely a great day for him.
So much was wrong about the draft, but the makeup of our military is wrong now, too, when it’s mostly made up of people who have no other options.
I really think there should be an additional tax each time we go to war or pseudo-war where we’re bombing people, etc. That would go a long way toward limiting all the politicians who have never seen a war they didn’t like.
Sorry for rambling!
I have always had a great affection for the mamas and papas. I just admire the harmony and the ability to sing strongly on their own line. Wonderful stuff.
