silly me, I thought it was about the artistic freedom to create satire, but maybe only Islam can be satirized? or maybe you aren’t an artist, despite your long running painting series? who defines art?
An electrifying experience of the largest crowd ever to fill the streets of Paris, somewhere between 1.5 and 2 million. Public transportation was free during the day. Many world leaders were present, but they stayed in the shadow to not disturb the magnificent show of unity of Parisians against terror. MIA was a representative of the White House or US Congress!! It was duly noted, the US was represented by its Ambassador Jane Hartley.
PM Netanyahu took the occasion of a memorial in the Grand Synagogue to make his usual election speech filled with nationalist propaganda at the end of the service.
Was the Cowboys’ new BFF Chris Christie there to cheer them on?
If I were a Wisconsin resident and football and Green Bay Packer fan, that 25 degree high would likely have kept me away.
If I were a Parisian, the presence of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the march might have been the deal breaker for me. OTOH, the French are proud of and want to preserve their culture which I suspect was the main motivation of most attendees. So, I’d probably have joined in. Plus workers in France still engage in protests.
Well, can’t seem to find any big rallies (except on Fox) for the NRA today so that may be the frosting on a meaningful day. Although we do now have terror alerts responding to ISIS thread against media, civilians, govt employees & soldiers in US, UK, France, Australia. Sigh, hope Anonymous makes good on their threat soon!
Socialism strikes a blow against Christie. Packer fans cleared the snow off the field just to humiliate him.
In France, dozens of heads of state who had imprisoned cartoonists showed up to promote freedom of the press.
John McCain and Lindsey Graham criticized President Obama for not going to Paris but did not lead by example. The President sent Eric Holder instead to look for more violators of US espionage statutes.
Betcha if you factored in the total number of people watching that game it would be much, much larger than the Paris crowd.
Betcha.
Which means?
Absolutely nothing.
The so-called “terrorist” wars will continue until when and if they peter out. Then they will soon be supplanted by other wars.
The so-called “sports” entertainments will also continue until their popularity peters out. They too will be supplanted by something else…perhaps a new sport, as MMA has done to boxing, perhaps something entirely different.
And almost nothing will change. Not perceptibly, anyway. Ever forward in minuscule evolutionary changes. Then a quantum leap and whatever outmoded species is dinosaured out of existence.
I’m not in any hurry for the tar pits, myself.
Y’all?
I’m not so sure.
You want to stop the Islamic terrorist thing?
Simply stop the economic imperialist policies of your country and its allies and then wait for the dust to settle. What’s that you say? Other countries will take over our robbery duties? Let them deal with the consequences.
But NOOOOoooo…
We won’t back offa the feed trough. “The American Dream” and all.
I’m not sure there are tar pits in the top-of-the-heap charismatic megafauna sweepstakes when the natural system collapses this time.
Chinese food? Really? That’s what’s obesing out our future generations? Well, I can go back to my pasta and diet Cokes then. Pork rinds, fatback, and fried everything.
And in foreign policy I see you are ready for China to experience some blowback instead of us for a change. Robbery duties seem to be part of the shared global infrastructure, like preventing piracy and keeping the shipping lanes open.
One thing the new sport won’t be is football (er, soccer). And no metric system either. Exceptionalism, you know.
But they’re not, MN. They are both media-driven. When the national/societal/cultural media come down hard on any side of any dispute or question/event, that’s when the crowds hit the streets in majority numbers.
Right now, right here in the U.S. I will guarantee that there is more media coverage per square consumer on the NFL boondoggle than there is on the happenings in France by a factor of 10 at the very least. Add up the number of media-addicted fools who are living life and death with the NFC and the number of media consumers who are acting the same way towards the French thing and I fucking guarantee it…the NFC wins 10 times over.
Ain’t no “jest” about it…unless of course you are into sick humor.
But then…so was :Lenny Bruce.
Look where it got him.
Think on it.

I wondered how many of the three million marchers were there because they hate Muslims. Or how many people tuned in the game at Lambeau Field because they hate the Cowboys.
Je suis Green Bay.
I guess that snark is now zero worthy.

Someone has their priorities straight.
And it’s not the USA.
??? what do you mean we, [……]?

French Jews told Netanyahu “Je suis Juif”.
of course if our President had attended we would be accused of trying to upstage the event. Presidenting while Black, …
Even Eric Holder didn’t show up for the public rassemblement. He was in Paris, too.
We sent our ambassador instead.
A needless blunder by the Obama admin. I mean, not even the old standby VP Joe Biden?

Shows what’s important in the USA and it’s not Liberty.
I guess I think the events are in such different contexts the comparison seems pure jest.
