I have been out of town, teaching a workshop at a lodge with no wifi. It was a mixed blessing, because while I was unable to Google images to show my students, I was also unaware of the disaster in the Himalyas and in Baltimore. Two distinctly different tragedies where disaster befell two areas of poverty.
It sounds callous to say I am glad I didn’t know about them at the time. I am aware of them now and we’ll make some contributions to Doctors without Borders for the earthquake victims. I’m not sure what to do about the Baltimore situation, though. The anger, frustration, and resentment of the people there isn’t going to go away anytime soon. Like the ruins of the Himilayas, the rubble in Baltimore will have to be cleared level by level and hopefully the residents will be survivors.
I know that the killing of a young black man at the hands of the police didn’t cause the riots; it was a spark that flamed into an explosion that has been smoldering for many years. Until there is change in how we deal with poverty and meet the needs of our poor, there won’t be change.
About as well os the political porn, the anti-Putin/anti-Russia porn, the war porn, the anti-Muslim porn and the drone porn.
