It sure sounds like we’re on the cusp of reaching an agreement with Iran. If the deal isn’t announced tonight, maybe it will be tomorrow, but imagine how the following will look if no agreement is ever reached.
Reflecting the ups and downs of negotiations on an agreement that would impose restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program in return for the lifting of sanctions, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani initially tweeted congratulations to his team on reaching a deal, then deleted the tweet.
Amazing what kind of snafus are made possible by Twitter. No?
In order to get it past Congress, Iran cannot be seen as being too happy.
In order for Rouhani to get it past his hardliners, the US cannot be seen as being too happy.
Ugh! We got a deal that neither of us like but both can live with doesn’t really inspire ratification either.
The domestic politics on both sides is hard, very hard.
The benefits of a deal in good faith are immense.
The benefits of a deal in good faith are immense.
It really would be a complete re-set in the Middle East.
The real reset would be normalization of relations with Iran after 36 years.
That would make the Fifth Fleet stationed in Bahrain capable of moving elsewhere.
just post after it’s done…on pins and needles right now.
Ah but the great country of Israel has already put out a large dog whistle to attract the attention of numerous politicians. That they have bought and paid for here in the USA Congress. To let them all know that Israel does not approve of the deal at all. Watch the show when it is announced.
I agree 100% with Tarheel Dem. A Persian friend of mine feels that a deal was pretty much done already by the weekend deadline, but that Kerry and Zarif have arranged to help one another by allowing each side to show clearly to its own idiots that they have wrung the last possible drop of blood from the other side’s stone.
There will be dancing in the streets in Tehran, as there was after the interim framework agreement was signed.
Rouhani is not Ahmedinejad. It is time for us to re-align our Middle East policy. Iran has a strong civil society that will be reinforced by the agreement; Saudi Arabia is run by a few families and exports Waha’abist Islamist Jihad, while Iran has been clearly moving away from Theocracy.
Both Iran and the US have a long way to go to become true egalitarian, democratic states; despite our increasing plutocratic appearances, we still have more of a democracy than Iran. Congress cannot really oust Obama; but Khamenei can yank Rouhani at any time. Considering that, the Iranian president has been very brave, I think.
Wait, isn’t this deal only good until Hillary bombs Iran?
Because everyone knows she’s going to bomb Iran, right?
Don’t think that it is only Republicans in the foreign policy establishment who are throwing sand in the gears. In the current political climate in DC, it is hard to distinguish judgement from political expediency.
For Obama and Kerry, getting a good faith deal is personal and historic. The other players have other agendas.
When and if the deal is announced, it will be a monumental moment. We’vve been paying for the Mossadegh coup since the Shah was deposed. This will be a turning point. Iran and the U.S. are natural allies. It took a president with real wisdom to recognize it.
Considering the slowed economy and general lack of demand for petroleum how can they agree to a treaty that would put Iran back in the oil business?
gird your loins. I think an announcement is coming.
And when the Senate rejects it?
this deal doesn’t need to be approved by Congress right? I thought it wasn’t going to be a treaty since so many parties are involved
The CIA couldn’t have hacked his Twitter accoiunt in an attempt to . . . . .
etc.
Amirite?
Last ditch effort by Bibi Netanyahu … after losing most allies in the world, does this arrogant sob think anyone is listening? Look at his recent twitter posts in English: The Islamic State of Iran – just like ISIS, but much bigger. ISIS was a creation out of the Iraq War vortex, initiated by George Bush with the support of PM Ariel Sharon. Netanyahu is no friend of the United States and never ended his antagonizing policy set by the White House [Haaretz article pdf] under president Obama.

looks like it’s a UN Security Council resolution not a treaty so Senate will not need to ratify anything
