I don’t have anything original or insightful to say about the whole Kathleen Kane fiasco that is unfolding like a bad nightmare here in Pennsylvania. It mainly offers us justification to hate everyone we’ve entrusted with running our government and courts. I cannot side with Attorney General Kane here, who I believe is justly accused of leaking grand jury testimony and who is clearly abusing her office to exact revenge on her critics. But her victims are about as unsympathetic as you can get.
It would be more amusing if it didn’t undermine everyone’s faith in government.
Some ugly stories about Anita Alvarez here in Cook County IL, also. Not much attention, because it’s sort of a tradition.
LINKS to the stories about Alvarez?
Who I believe is incompetent and corrupt.
Here’s one that I remember. http://www.bettergov.org/news/voter-fraud-in-elmwood-park
Unfortunately this link doesn’t mention the allegations (reported by the Daily Herald, I think) that Cupello registered in Elmwood Park as part of a deal with the Republican mayor of Elmwood Park, although I confess that I don’t see the value in just one vote. I do think it’s significant that he wasn’t suspended or sacked over this. I’m surprised that I found this link as I read the original story in a print newspaper at work. It stuck in my mind because I grew up in Elmwood Park (Republican version of Little Chicago). Other things I heard were in opposition campaign ads, so the details probably aren’t available. General cronyism and intimations of justice for sale. Again, not noteworthy in Cook County. Or “Crook County” as it’s called in DuPage although they can hardly be held up as a model either.
It’s unfortunate that she chose to leak GJ information. Make a mistake like that, other things can be lost or destroyed.
It looks more and more like her entire situation is questionable. Might she go to jail? Really too bad.
These stories ultimately hurt the Democratic party, regardless of who actually does it. That makes our work that much harder.
Given the fact that the squabble is over the holy-of-holies Penn State University sports, we are in the realm of religious controversy in which the facts do not matter and the process of the law is an instrument of politics.
It also ensures a GOP attorney general, which likely does not improve the legal process situation.
Still, a three-year grand jury has the superficial look of what McCulloch did with the killer of Michael Brown in St. Louis.
Did the leaked grand jury information actually say anything? In other words, what is the credible motive for Kane leaking the information as opposed to being able to construct a follow-on case with it?
But it does sound like an ambitious prosecutor got in over her head in going up against some major powers.
As I said
Continuing to demonstrate the political impulses/instincts of a novice that doesn’t have much innate talent in this area.
To be honest…spill it all. She’s not going down alone.
I think every single person in this whole story is disgusting and awful. That said, I want her to keep releasing emails. We hold judges to a higher standard, because they have power over the lives and liberty of ordinary citizens.
As for undermining faith in government, Pennsylvanians haven’t had faith in their government for years. The state is legendarily corrupt and every one of us that lives in this cesspool knows it.
