I guess it’s no surprise that Cleveland needs to spend some money on crowd control for the July 18-21, 2016 Republican National Convention.
Cleveland is seeking to buy 2,000 sets of riot gear, including riot-control suits and collapsible batons, as part of the city’s latest move to spend a $50 million federal security grant for July’s Republican National Convention.
The city this week posted to its contracting website a notice seeking bidders to provide the gear. City documents refer to the “Elite Defender” riot-control suit manufactured by HWI Gear and a 26-inch baton manufactured by Monadnock, plus 2,000 bags to carry them.
The city also wants to buy 310 sets of riot-control gear — long-sleeve jackets, gloves and shin guards — that would be suitable for use by police riding bicycles.
But I don’t know how many people realized that this is all going to be needed to keep the peace inside the Quicken Loans Arena.
Well… Since about 1920, the GOP has always been about 50 years behind …
So they get their Chicago 1968, finally.
This will nothing like 1968. Cleveland needs to do a more than plan for crowd control. This an open carry state. Only gun restriction is some training needed for a conceal and carry lic. This is the 21st century.
RedDan as you seem to still be in good standing at dKos have you considered inviting a few of the thoughtful people over there that will soon be silence to join us here?
I will invite them… I will mostly stay there tho. I’ve been a reasonably successful contrarian there for a long time — pretty good at the whole “message discipline” and “democratic centralism” thing. Comes with the socialist stuff, I guess.
○ Catalogue HWI Gear [pdf]
HWI Gear, Inc. is a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Business .. hey they need the business!!
HWI Gear also serves our militia as recommended on survivalist websites. 😉
And just think, if the Cleveland Police Department and the Republican Party pursued policies and activities that were less outrageous and more acceptable to the people they govern, they wouldn’t feel the need to spend these heavy sums in anticipation of the need to further oppress the oppressed. As it is, the taxpayers are forced to foot the price of business for these people.
So was the American Conservative right about this? It would seem so.

I’ve caught a little of the CPAC presentations today. Here’s a good, moderate, not at all insane (and by that, I mean thoroughly and remarkably crazed) presentation by Sister Malkin:
Now these are sentiments that 99% of Real Americans can get behind. Why is it necessary to call out the Republican Party so rudely?
What’s that you say? Real Americans are about 20% of the total American population?
Never mind.
This woman is full of Hot Air, just like her blog. Before trying to be an expert on education, I wish she would take some time to study John Dewey.
Even from a movement well known for its extreme anger and hostility, Malkin is an outlier. Not a base builder.
And yes, her views re. educational policy are hostile to the common good.
She came to DC from the Seattle Times, and I befriended her during her time here. In those days she was a true believer, but willing to think outside the box and respectful of other views. At some point she decided as a reasonably attractive woman of color she could make more money by pretending to froth at the mouth, and at some point after that, it ceased to be an act. I feel sorry for the person she once was, and for the victims of the fantasy-fueled sociopath she trained herself to become.
Objection to Arne Duncan and Common Core is pretty damn bipartisan. Ask Rahm Emmanuel.

Keep on listening- Malkin’s educational agenda sails far past Common Core.
Diane Ravitch might have some authority on the subject?

I don’t even need to click through; the still says it all.
By that logic, then…
Steady on.
But that’s counter to the narrative!
Here, let’s see how the local MN police treated journalists at the RNC in 2008:
Thanks for posting. The militarisation of the US which has been transparently displayed in recent years is a devastating blow to American prestige. The PATRIOT Act and the ensuing erosion of legal rights is a disastrous turning point for the USA that will require a century of activism to make good, if ever.
I wonder if the protestors will be armed nd fight back this being a gun nut state.
I fear for the future of our country, I really do.
I posted on another blog yesterday that Cleveland’s gonna need to really work on security. There’s going to be whole lot of ANGRY 2d Amendment types, who’ve been dutifully fluffed up by Wayne LaPierre.
They’re already seeing that the GOP PTB don’t want Trump and are threatening to do something about it.
This could get real ugly real fast. Disclaimer: I hope not, but I do live in reality.
Of course, the rightwing media, should anything happen, will reliably try to blame any violence on “leftists.”
Bank on it.
Then, the utter desperation motivating a ‘hail Mary’ strategy along these lines:
So, Perfect Storm or Sharknado?
Fear not! The establishment has brought science — yes, science! — to the rescue!

I needed a good laugh today. The last sentence: “At press time, Larson announced the team had devised a new method of abstraction and mathematical induction in which lower numbers have a greater numerical value than their higher counterparts.”
Meanwhile, as inside the arena an amped-up crowd sings “God Bless America” for the 14th time, the remaining clown car passengers are wandering through the bowels of the complex yelling, “Hello, Cleveland!” Meet your putative leaders of the free world, fresh off their new hit album, “Smell the Iron Glove.” Pity about Ben Carson and that unfortunate gardening accident…
Looks as if Republican voters don’t want to roll back the clock in one area. Presidential election year national conventions ceased to have a real purpose (beyond partying for a few days) when a nomination was won through primaries/caucuses. (Voting on changes to the party platforms is as perfunctory as the delegate roll call for the nomination.)
So, why aren’t “conservatives” happy with their elites choosing their nominee as was done for nearly two centuries? Could they be, shudder-shudder, cafeteria conservatives? They can’t even figure out which decade and which century to plant their little conservative flags.
I say that if they want to rumble in Cleveland they show up well armed with their 2nd Amendment guaranteed muskets and get there on their horses and river rafts.
In some yet to be determined very important role.
The Guardian —Ben Carson drops out of presidential race: ‘I’m leaving the campaign trail’ . His campaign such as it was outside of his massive direct mail fundraising operation.
The CPAC bros gave Dr. Ben a standing ovation. (Maybe they’d like some of whatever drug(s) Dr. Ben consumes.)
weirdness over at the orange place; New Rule about not rocking the boat if Hillary wins lots on Mar 15. otoh i’m amazed, in retrospect, we managed to shout down DFA’s bandwagon for Hillary; may be the only instance
That will cut down on the site traffic and only the bestest people will remain for their boring circle jerks.
As an election and political prognosticator, Kos tends to suck. Although can’t honestly say that I’ve given more than a glance to any of his posts since early 2004. Other than Hunter and sometimes MB (the two of us had a falling out over the bombing of Libya), don’t read the FP. The debate threads are easier to read than watching the debates, but recognize that they are so non-objective that the threads and the actual debates aren’t similar.
Maybe some of the authentic bestest folks over there will join us here.
there are a few posters over there I follow – who write on items of interest to me never discussed over here and have very well run diaries and Bob Johnson [and his dog Rex when Rex posts, although he hasn’t recently]. as far as fp goes, Hunter I like to read, and the early morning summaries. there are a few topics regularly covered by non fp diarists that aren’t covered here – anyway, some ppl are already leaving due to the edict or at least writing diaries to that effect. I somehow missed kos’s edict, so took a little catching up today. Bob Johnson had an interesting diary on unintended consequences. I may actually leave since I completely disagree with the edict.
Bob’s been around for a long time and can’t say that I’ve ever disagreed with him, but now that I think about it can’t recall if he participated in the 2004 primary battles. MB arrived in mid-2003. Soto, Billmon, and I all started commenting at about the same time, right after the 2002 midterms (Kos’s predictions were worse than a coin flip.)
The slower pace here suits me better than dKos, and I like the basic Scoop system, although it’s probably inadequate for a high traffic site.
