The unexpected increase in premature deaths in the white community over the last couple of decades is an increasingly hot topic, and every time it comes up, people note that white people (even working class rural white Americans) still live longer than blacks. Why should people focus so much energy on a segment of the population that is still comparatively privileged?
Well, I’ll give you a few reasons for that.
Number one, and it’s not just women:
Among African Americans, Hispanics and even the oldest white Americans, death rates have continued to fall. But for white women in what should be the prime of their lives, death rates have spiked upward. In one of the hardest-hit groups — rural white women in their late 40s — the death rate has risen by 30 percent.
The issue here isn’t overall rates of life expectancy but the fact that whites alone are moving in the wrong direction.
Number two, the numbers are staggering:
Compared with a scenario in which mortality rates for whites continued to fall steadily after 1998, roughly 650,000 people have died prematurely since 1999 — around 450,000 men and nearly 200,000 women.
That number nearly equals the death toll of the American Civil War.
That’s remarkable, don’t you think? It’s almost as if we had a Civil War and no one noticed until some academics began digging into the cross tabs of the CDC’s 2014 annual report on American health.
Number three, overall, the victims are not from some privileged background:
Some regions are hit especially hard, such as the belt of poverty and pain that runs across the northern tier of the South, incorporating much of West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee and Arkansas. But significant increases in white mortality also showed up in the small-town and rural Midwest — such as Johnson County, Iowa, home of the University of Iowa — and in parts of the American West, such as Nye County, Nev., and Siskiyou County, Calif…
…[Princeton University economist Anne] Case said that the whites who are dying are not America’s elites.
“They may be privileged by the color of their skin,” she said, “but that is the only way in their lives they’ve ever been privileged.”
And, number four, this phenomenon probably goes a long way towards describing the crackup of the Republican Party, and so it has major political ramifications. For one thing, areas with the highest die-off of whites correlate with areas where Donald Trump has done well in the primaries.
Predominantly white, working-class areas with high death rates have proved to be fertile ground for Trump. Political observers speculate that the voter anger driving his campaign emerges from the many distresses felt in these economically challenged — and increasingly morbid — places.
The wave of lethal agents rolling across the country is broad in its effects, but it appears to be cresting in places that are particularly vulnerable — such as a town where the trains no longer stop, or a small city that saw its biggest manufacturer move overseas, or in a household broken by divorce or substance abuse or tragedy.
Or in the mind and body of someone who is doing poorly, and just barely hanging on.
It’s easy to see the correlation between areas that vote Republican and areas where whites are dying in droves. The orange areas are where mortality is increasing and the blue areas are where it is decreasing.
Republicans don’t need to look much further to get a clue as to why their base of supporters is in full revolt against their party’s Establishment elites. The GOP has been oblivious as their base’s communities have been decimated by an opioid epidemic, rising levels of alcoholism and suicide, and a loss of life comparable to the deadliest war in our nation’s history. Fighting Obamacare (which has done wonders for the treatment of mental illness and addiction) is doing nothing for these communities. Tax cuts for the rich and deregulatory schemes for Wall Street won’t help them one iota. Unisex bathrooms and gay marriage aren’t what’s ailing them.
Democrats get frustrated that these folks keep turning to the GOP for help when it should be manifestly obvious by now that the Republicans have nothing to offer them. There ought to be a political opportunity now to step in with sensible plans to make a real difference in their lives, but it’s really up to the people who represent these communities to come to the Democrats in the spirit of cooperation. They ought to know their constituents and their needs better than anyone, but it’s difficult to force politicians to take help that they won’t even request.
There are a lot of progressive solutions that could be pursued. Democrats have already been leading the way on efforts at smoking cessation. The First Lady has tried to lead people into healthier eating habits, including efforts to give people access to better quality food. The Senate just passed a bill to help address the enormous needs we have to get treatment for opioid-dependent people, but the Republicans refuse to add any meaningful funding to it. I already mentioned how Obamacare makes it easier to get addiction treatment. The president has done a lot in consumer protection, including major credit card reform, vastly increased scrutiny of predatory lenders, and a much-needed overhaul of the college lending system. Bernie Sanders is pushing for free tuition at college universities.
These are starting points, but there are limits to how much a party can do to help the opposing party’s base of supporters if they can’t get any cooperation. A president is a representative of all the people, though, even when they are a Democrat. If, as expected, the next president is a Democrat, it’d be nice if some Republican lawmakers were willing to work with them to find solutions that can reverse this troubling trend.
Because the fascism of Trump is a much less appealing alternative, for all of us.
The Democratic Party in a lot of these places is in an even bigger mess than in NY or RI. Democrats don’t get frustrated. It’s the DFH’s that are frustrated, if anything.
And Republicans expected that their draconian social/welfare policies would target the DEM base for early deaths and with poor white folks breeding like rabbits increase their base.
Well, they stick a lot of Dem base members in their rural prisons and get to count them for voter population purposes. So they did think ahead, no?
That’s a GOP trifecta. Incarcerate more minorities, site new prisons in economically struggling white communities (government jobs), and get more representation in state and federal governments. A fourth bennie, shovels more government money into the pockets of the owners of the private prison complex.
Indeed, a Perfecta!
Thank you — “perfecta” is a good word for policies that exceed trifecta.
But, the right has out sourced the jobs in the prison system. What was once a government jobs is now a $7.25-$14 an hour forever job. In a couple of years the corporate fast food/retail worker might be earning more than the prison guard or the food service worker. If that don’t wake them up…there is no hope.
LOL Is the Prison Guard’s Union the only conventional union that is still growing in the US? Possibly.
If Republican union-busting governors have their way, there won’t be any union representing correctional officers. 🙁
It’s the latest thing since sliced bread.

I’m not necessarily talking about Dems winning these districts, although that would be nice.
I’m talking about a Democratic president trying to save some of their lives and taking some of the pressure off that is causing these national freakout in our politics.
Sorry, freakout is the proper response to our general situation, in case you have not noticed?
That would presume a President that cared. Besides onlyblacklivesmatter.
Frankly, none of us matter to them any more.
Agree. None of the rabble matter at all to anyone in the .001% or to their political toadys.
What, not all racist…”crackers”, was it?
This is neoliberal Social Darwinism in action. You are responsible for yourself. Have you not read the “bootstrap” literature from National Review?
Yes, what’s the matter with these people? Didn’t they read Ayn Rand and get the message to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and get to Galts Gulch on their own to enjoy their bright shining destiny???
In all seriousness, though, I’ve read some pretty sad commentaries – I think they’re “for real” – from what appear to be less wealthy white people all nattering in survivalist mode about how horrid it is to expect anything – anything!!! – from the government. And about how it’s all about surviving and ONLY taking care of yourself and maybe your own family. And that NO ONE should expect any sort of help from anyone else.
These are the people that are dying in droves (apparently). Better to die young than to, you know, have healthy communities made more vibrant by better support from your taxes. Better to have you tax dollars spent on droning your “enemies” somewhere else, I guess.
I don’t these folks will never come over to the Democratic column. Their political beliefs are based on cultural identity, not economic policy. As long as Democrats/liberals/”The LEFT” is seen by them as the root of all evil, they won’t listen to any economic arguments that Democrats make, let alone weigh them on their merits.
They’re trapped by the same lack of respect for the truth as the Republican party in general. The truth is whatever they need it to be to gain whatever advantage they’re looking for (or to blame the left for all their problems) on any given day. Their whole political identity is built on a foundation of bullshit. They are incapable of admitting that which also makes it impossible for them to change course.
The Calvinistic base for neoliberalism. It is just too easy with USians….
Those people used to be Democrats. They framed newspaper photos of FDR in their tarred shacks. You have to ask what changed. They were always poor, always religious, always fundamentalists. Where applicable they were always confederate sympathizers.
What turned them from thinking the Democratic party was their friend to thinking it was their enemy? Could it be the truth? Could it be the (D) party sucking up to Wall Street?
Uh, could it be racism on occasion? Could it be cultural issues? Could it be fear of losing what they have to other people in worse conditions than they are? Could it be right wing radio which basically blankets some of the job sites I’ve been to? There’s a lot bigger world of blame-for-things out there than Wall Street.
W.J. Cash’s “The Mind of the South” was published in 1941. I think what’s happened is that we have had a Southernization of the country for the last several decades. Maybe Nashville won and Boston lost? Here is the concluding paragraph from “The Mind of the South.”
“Proud, brave, honorable by its lights, courteous, personally generous, loyal, swift to act, often too swift, but signally effective, sometimes terrible, in its action — such was the South at its best. And such at its best it remains today, despite the great falling away in some of its virtues. Violence, intolerance, aversion and suspicion toward new ideas, an incapacity for analysis, an inclination to act from feeling rather than from thought, an exaggerated individualism and too narrow concept of social responsibility, attachment to fictions and false values, above all too great attachment to racial values and a tendency to justify cruelty and injustice in the name of those values, sentimentality and a lack of realism — these have been its characteristic vices in the past. And, despite changes for the better, they remain its characteristic vices today.
karl, this quote is very resonant for today. Thanks very much for sharing it.
LBJ said that the Civil Rights Act would turn most of the Dixiecrats into Republcians, and it did.
With the aid of Nixon, Lee Atwater developed the Southern Strategy, and this is one of the logical results.
Rupert Murdoch, et al, developed his racist dog whistling version of unhinged from reality but My How Nice to be an unfettered racist – doesn’t that distract you, while I rob you? – version of “nooz,” and the rest is history.
It’s not too hard to figure it out. Poor whites could always feel superior to the N-words. Once Civil Rights gave them more or less equal rights? Well, all bets were off.
So much better to feel “vindicated” by being a racist, feeling victimized in your Christiany churches, and punching so-called “liberals” for all of your ills. Permits you to take NO responsibility for your plight, while feeling superior to those you are taught to hate. Guess you can feel so superior as you die??
Agreed. Sometimes feeling superior is all it takes. This is the sentiment I see with right wing friends, who think all’s been figured out by Limbaugh.
LBJ said “for a generation.” A generation is roughly twenty years. He knew what and how these people were held within the democratic coalition for over thirty years and expected his fellow Democratic successors to figure out how to get them back once the hot flame of racism cooled down. When that time came, DEMs chose to be economic Republicans and that pushed Republicans into blowing on the racist embers.
That is certainly one way of framing what happened. It’s also due to greed run amok amongst all the 1%, but the rise of rightwing tv and hate radio has certainly played a huge role in persuading a big chunk of citizens to be enamored with racism as the go to for blaming all ills on “the other,” and then never thinking of any other solutions.
But the D party certainly plays a big role by abandoning whatever principles they had at one time.
Nowadays it’s everyone for themselves alone, and we are adjured to never ever ever consider anything by teensy tinsy microscopic “incremental” changes just because!
So, you date the “hot flame of racism” cooling down, when?
Ever spent any considerable amount of time living in the South?
Could it be the destruction of the educational system in GOP areas? Could it be right wing media using racism to terrify people? Could it be that they have been systematically made ignorant and desperate?
Yes, the Dems haven’t done enough for them. But the Dems weren’t given any power in their communities. Let’s put the blame where it belongs.
Then blame our conceit of “rugged individualism.” AA and Hispanics have had the same pressures and do not show these mortality rates. What COULD be the difference???
Cultural, I suspect. Lot of communitarianism in those heritages.
My personal observation is that a lot more older white people smoke than older black people. It could be that the black smokers died earlier so I don’t see them now. Or it could be that black people are smarter. OTOH, the traditional AA diet is very unhealthy compared with say the traditional Italian or Norwegian diet. I’m betting on smoking.
No. The Western diet is a toxic one for any race but Northern Europeans.
Mixing lots of refined sugar with fat and salt is a typical western diet, and it’s terrible for everyone. Throw in alcohol and various prescription drugs, and it’s a recipe for a body to age really, really fast.
That said, remove sugar and alcohol (another sugar) and prescription drugs, and you can pretty much eat whatever you want and be relatively healthy, especially if you move around with some sort of exercise.
A lot of fatty meat and salt in soul food. tastes good, but not good for you. Scandinavian diet is rich in fish, much better. Most Asian food is rich in vegetables, lighter on meat, very good also. Agree that typical American diet in general, meat, meat, and more meat swallowed with sugary drinks or beer, is terrible.
Smoking doesn’t usually kill you in your forties, does it?
It can.
Smoking, in re: cancer, COPD, emphysema, etc, doesn’t necessarily kill you in your 40s, but smoking is a vasoconstrictor, so throw smoking on top of alcohol (vasoconstrictor and poison), sugar, salt, and fat, and you’re screwing with all sorts of body systems.
For example, smoking increases the likelihood of a bunch of cancers outside of the lungs, such as pancreatic cancer, renal cancer, etc.
It’s not just the tar and chemicals. It’s the vasoconstrictor action of nicotine. You make the heart have to pump harder to circulate blood. This eventually helps to blow out your vascular system, whether the vessels in your eyes, brain, heart, kidneys, etc. Alcohol, too, is a vasoconstrictor, in addition to damaging neurons and destroying your liver.
Smoking and alcohol don’t always kill you with lung cancer and cirrhosis. They slowly destroy your organs and body systems which cascade into other problems, etc, etc.
Where does the blame belong? I mean from my limited personal experience in rural California, you are way more likely to hear about liberals, Obama, and “illegals” than Wall Street. Tom McClintock, a right wing stooge who is not even local, wins my district on these issues, and guns, every two goddamn years.
Yeah, and let’s not forget all those far Northern CA voters who want to secede from CA to form the new state of Jefferson. That’s where Siskiyou County is, which is mentioned in the post. These far northern CA counties are turning into ghost towns and giant meth labs with jobs few and far between. In answer to one of the threads, above, one of the bigger employers are various prisons.
Ironically, it’s this part of CA that gets the most support from state and federal funding of various sorts, but these rightwingers (the area, other than that around CA State Humboldt, trends conservative) want to secede from CA bc taxes! Yet they have little to nothing to offer their constituents should this unlikely event happen. Frankly, they’d end up much worse off than they are now.
Some of the biggest problems up there are drug addiction, the cartels incursion into pot farming (causing boatloads of environmental and criminal problems), mainly meth but also oxy. Lots of meth production up there with the attendant issues of homes blowing up or becoming toxic waste dumps.
It’s a mess, but let’s all be Ayn Randian bootstrappers, pay no taxes at all, and life will be just lovely. Makes no sense, but there you have it.
Yep. And I work in the Redding-Eureka areas a lot so see it up close. It’s kind of amazing, really, since the employer that offers the most stability seems to be government (or government related). Education, water, forestry, highways, general administrative–those are the jobs with benefits. As soon as Jefferson secedes, it’ll be Mississippi on the West Coast. But folks will have their guns and weed!
Yes, exactly. Most of the jobs in that part of CA that are anything close to being decent are govt jobs of one sort or another. There’s very little in the way of privately owned businesses, other than some retail/grocery, but not even a lot of that.
I think some of the bigger push for the state of Jefferson comes from the usual suspects: aging white pensioners (probably most are on govt pensions in this case), who don’t want to pay it forward anymore for the next generation. What do they care if the younger generations have no jobs and no future? Who cares? As long as they can plug into Rush & Fox 24/7/365 and get mad as hell at the “illegals” and ISIS and whatever, that’s all they care about.
Who’s supposed to run and manage Jefferson, once there’s no taxes to support it is not something these know-nothings bother to consider. It’s all about: I don’t want to pay ANY taxes, and I’m self-sufficient (on my govt pension, on Soc Sec & Medicare), so Eff everyone else, I got MINE.
Crazy town. That’s why the younger set mainly makes money off of growing/cooking and selling drugs. There’s nothing else available (not snark).
Oh, and yes, then they can have less restrictive gun laws (as if the laws are so horrid now), and they can vote in anti-gay & anti-abortion laws. That’ll make life so much better! You betcha!
ratings never ‘stick’ here)
Sad that we probably all know people that keep pulling the lever to make their lives harder. Someone close to me finally put themself through college, which I’m happy about, but did so largely on the public dime as a single mother with not much money. She voted Republican last election because she didn’t think “those” people should be taking “her” tax dollars. Obama just “gave” everything away. When I pointed out that she was, until very recently, one of “those” people, all she could say was that she had a job “now” and “they” didn’t deserve “her” money. All I could do was sigh.
Well that’s just it, isn’t it? When rightwing people avail themselves of govt aid, it’s all put into the terms of: well, I either have already paid into the system – or I will pay into the system when I’m done with college or whatever – but THOSE PEOPLE never ever ever ever pay into the system. So I deserve to get welfare, but they do not.
The end.
Any amount of information and statistics that belies this ignorant and mostly incorrect belief system is simply ignored.
Ergo, my conclusion is that they ENJOY being racists, and they do not want to deviate from that mind set. Because, really, what else is it but tribalism?
I’ve had the exact same experience with my rightwing family. It’s all very fine for them to get govt aid, but it’s simply not OK for any of “those people” to get it because they don’t “work for it.”
Putrid, but this is how we got to where we are.
Tribalism.
When their elderly parents are collecting SS, Medicare and Medicaid, it’s OK, because they and theirs are “real Americans” and deserve it.
When other people who don’t look or act like them receive the same benefits, they are moochers and looters.
Gee, do you suppose, while walking down the street, she could instantly point out which of the people she’d see would be “those people”?
Yeah, probably.
Yep. It saddens me even more because she used to not be that way. It’s like getting public help after she lost her job warped her mind in the sense that, she saw other people like herself in lines, and decided she was so much different. We don’t talk politics anymore, needless-to-say.
choice of phrase.
(This isn’t negative criticism. I like the choice.)
“Die-off” is a common term in population biology/ecology, referring to an episode in which some factor(s) result in mortality of a significant proportion of some population at a higher than average rate.
Some people believe
It is better to light a candle than curse the darkness.
These people believe:
It is better to curse the blacks, the poor, the gay, the immigrants, etc. than it is to help themselves.
It’s a proven fact that people generally can more easily live with a problem they think can’t be solved, than with a solution they can’t understand. Abstinence, austerity, pain – these are things that they believe in and must be right. Planned parenthood, government demand to jumpstart the economy, health care for people who need it even if they aren’t wealthy – can’t be right.
Very small minded people who value their prejudices over their own well being, they would rather die than help other people along with themselves.
It must be fun to be that sanctimonious.
They seem to “get” something out of their blind arrogance and self-righteous indignation, even if it’s the death of them.
I don’t get it myself. Most of these “values” voters profess to be big time “Christians,” where their profit extoled helping others, especially the poor and the ill. But that’s emphatically what they do not want to do, no matter what the cost is for themselves.
Cognitive dissonance on display.
hee hee I misspelled “prophet” as “profit” above. Talk about a Freudian slip, but then again, I think I spelled it correctly the first time! it’s the worship of Mammon that gets us to this place. And their prophets did explain that, but somehow it’s lost in translation in these days.
Stuck in the Old Testament, (by design) bring up the actual words of Jesus as quoted, especially something like The Sermon on the Mount, and a strange anger seems to come over them, at least in my experience.
Can’t have any long haired hippy socialist, messing up their religion ….
Come live here in of the red hellholes and see it up close and face to face.
These people REALLY would rather blame anyone but themselves for their ills.
They’ve been used and cast away like dirty rags, and blame the other rags for it.
This is what thirty years of direct injection of right-wing propaganda does to people.
US Conservatives are the biggest victims on the planet.
Everyone else is supposed to be able to pull themselves up by their bootstraps.
Meanwhile, the only reason they aren’t personally rich is because liberals take all of tax money they pay and give it to “those people”.
It’s cognitive dissonance and projection, all the way down.
New numbers from JAMA. “For poor Americans, the place they call home can be a matter of life or death.”
http://jama.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=2513561
Lot of information to take in. Have bookmarked it to read and study later.
Progressive solutions my ass. Don’t you see? This is just one more example of white privilege. These people are getting into better sections of heaven, on better terms, with much less waiting time.
And now you want to give them free stuff?
LOL
These same people are the first to elect state legislators that make the most reactionary people in Congress look like peace and love hippies.
It is the end game of voting against your own interests for a generation or three.
I feel sorry for them, but there’s a large part of me that says
“Tough shit assholes…you’ve been blighting MY life too!
Just die already you worthless reactionary shits.
Go cling to your guns and religion..they still won’t save you from yourselves.”
But then I live in one of those states…
Well it sounds like a case of natural selection to me.
I’m sure the R’s will treat it just like climate change. Shrug their shoulders and say “Nothing we can do about it but cut taxes and shrink government and let the free market figure it out.” Or in the case of Kansas raise taxes on poor people.
This is exactly why Trump is ahead.
You just made the best case I’ve seen yet for not only why we need a political revolution but why it’s the only way out of the disastrous mess the Democratic Party finds itself in.
“…areas with the highest die-off of whites correlate with areas where Donald Trump has done well in the primaries….Republicans don’t need to look much further to get a clue as to why their base of supporters is in full revolt against their party’s Establishment elites.”
Ever since Al From/Hillary/Bill Clinton embraced neoliberalism, the Democratic Party became more than useless to these dying people. To be fair, the neoliberal Republican Party always has also been more than useless to these same people. To understand why let’s take another look at just what neoliberalism actually is:
“Neoliberalism is famously associated with the economic policies introduced by Margaret Thatcher in the United Kingdom and Ronald Reagan in the United States…Its advocates support extensive economic liberalization policies such as privatization, fiscal austerity, deregulation, free trade, and reductions in government spending in order to enhance the role of the private sector in the economy.”
This is exactly what the Clinton Machine embraced in order to turn the Democratic Party into the Party of Big Money. What this meant in real time was the very destruction of the communities where these dying people attempt to live.
If you want to boil this down to the single most important issue fueling this ongoing disaster you would be left with `free’ trade; stupid people making stupid deals, as Trump puts it. Many here may object to Obama and Hillary’s being included in that group of stupid people making stupid deals but their promotion of TPP is just another continuation in a series of stupid deals that destroy our economy except for the super rich. I know Hillary wants to distance herself from that but no one believes her, even her corporate masters. This is the gold standard of neoliberalism and everyone knows it.
Far too many people want to think Trump is resonating because of racism. That may be true but remember, they could get just as much racism, maybe more, from any number of other Republicans. The reason for the open rebellion and the embrace of the fascism of Trump is because he is the only Republican alternative to neo-liberalism. He’s going to make a deal to bring their jobs back, to make America Great Again.
So, to deal with this we have the usual New Democrat type proposals such as efforts to promote smoking cessation, healthier eating habits and access to better quality food. These things might sound good and may sound even better once they’re packaged as a Hillary Half Measure but it’s not what these people want or need. They want their lives back. They want their jobs back that have been running around the world looking for the lowest wage. If all they have to choose from is more of the same old, same old Hillary neo-liberalism, the fascism of a Trump becomes quite an appealing alternative.
The only real problem with this alternative is that Trump is an idiot, something they already know; the very reason populist Bernie beats Trump by landside margins. What happens when these dying people get a creditable alternative to neo-liberalism then get invited in to participate in a political revolution against the very forces that have destroyed their lives. I’ll tell you what happens; red states turn blue and so does the congress.
If you don’t want the fascism of Trump then chose the political revolution of Bernie Sanders, sort of like making the choice, MLK or Malcolm X. Winter is coming, ready or not.
