We’ve been working hard for the last few months to redesign the Washington Monthly website. The old one was the bane of my existence, so I’d like to do a little dance on its grave.
We’re still working out the kinks, but the new site launched yesterday. Please go check it out. And please bookmark Political Animal. If you like to use a RSS feed, grab this one.
We’ll be launching the new issue of the magazine over the weekend, and you’ll all be able to read it at the new place on Monday morning.
I feel like I just traded in a Pinto for the Space Shuttle.
You should find it much easier to navigate our site and find the substantive articles that interest you.
So, please go take a look.
looks like you moved from 1999 to 2016 very nice
Not bad. And I say that honestly. Seems to work fairly smoothly on mobile. Updating this blog next?
Also, how about that woman punching the Telemundo reporter? Philly!
I check it daily and have been having a bit of a hard time with it. The look is great. But finding the most recent posts is not intuitive. As a reader, I prefer the old site — at least until this issue is resolved.
A “New” flag conditioned on being less than 24 hours 0 minutes 0 seconds is the functional description of what you need. Hope that the content management system WaMo is using can implement that easily.
I’m in the same boat; more images = bloated. Liked the old texty site much better; especially for Political Animal (scrolling, scrolling, scrolling…). This seems more ADD-bait and the content is less accessible. Seems another listicle trap on first appearances.
Why are all my former favourite sites turning into Gawker look-alikes? People just don’t read any more I guess.
A few years of this and we will be back to bulletin boards for a relief from all the razzle-dazzle.
Exactly on everything you said. The old site had a warm, friendly feel to it, a unique look, and it was easy to read. The new sterile website now looks like every other website that’s been redesigned in the past few years. Thanks, WaMo, for the big banner at the top and, like you said, “scrolling, scrolling, scrolling…”
You can bookmark political animal and have it scroll with the most recent post first:

Thanks. Still found the presentation of this feature on the old site more restful.
I have a new generation iPad and the other site NEVER loaded. I never stayed.
This is 5000X better.
.
Nice work. You keep earning your keep there, Martin.
Lee Drutman’s article on political consulting caught my interests. Good work.
Good. I really enjoyed the article on regional disparities in the US. But, several typos (added hyphens where they don’t belong, mixing up inequality and equality). Real proof reading in journalism is something I miss from the old days. Computerized proof reading still doesn’t seem to be up to the task.
Cost-benefit sadly.
It looks fantastic – congrats!!
The old site kept freezing up on me, so this is so much easier!
Looks pretty spiffy, nice job.
When will you get rid of the comments? I suppose it drives some repeated page views, but mostly it just seems to make people mad.
Looks good to me. Like that it features all the news available on WaMo, not just the blog. Curious about the Pinto -> Space Shuttle comparison; what did you do to upgrade it from vintage 70s automobile to late 20th century spacecraft?
Fantastic work. Y’all should be very proud.
Wow. That article on Populism is killer. http://washingtonmonthly.com/magazine/junejulyaug-2016/populism-with-a-brain/
Look is extremely spiffy! And doesn’t seem to blow up the shockwave on my poor old machine the way most of these complex sites have been doing.
